DMX has dealt with personal issues his whole life

DMX is a respected hip-hop icon who has had several personal battles over the years. Since the release of his 1998 debut album It’s Dark and Hell is Hot DMX has been in and out of prison with more than 20 arrests on charges including resisting arrest, animal cruelty, reckless driving, unlicensed driving, drug possession, and identity falsification.

DMX has spoken openly in the past about his addiction to crack cocaine, which began when he was 14 years old after he smoked a joint laced with the drug.

In February 2016, DMX was found unresponsive in a Ramada Inn parking lot in his hometown of Yonkers. According to Pix11, a witness said he ingested some type of substance before collapsing, but police found no illegal substances on the property. DMX stated that it was from an asthma attack.

DMX found clarity in Christianity

After he was released from prison in 2019, DMX publicly declared his love and appreciation for God and how much his faith has changed his life. He reportedly told a fan about it not long after his release.

“God had his hand on me since before the womb,” he said. “I didn’t know what that meant until I read the Bible… Like, this n***a is going to do this. He’s going to make this happen; he’s going to touch this person.

“I am God’s child,” he added.

DMX was studying to be a pastor

DMX’s dedication to his spirituality runs much deeper. While in jail in 2009, he tried to project positivity in an interview. “I came here to meet somebody —don’t know who it was, but I’ll know when I see him. And I came here to give him a message. And that message is Jesus loves them,” he said.

During an interview he did in prison in 2012, he spoke of the “call” he felt to be a pastor and use his body as a spiritual vessel.

“I will not be a priest. I will be a pastor,” he said. “I’m already a deacon. I will be a pastor.”

He said in his prison interview that he wanted to give his first sermon in the church after he was released. “That’s gonna be incredible for me and I hope it’ll be incredible for the congregation of that church,” he said. “I hope I’m able to reach somebody you know and touch somebody and bring them closer to the Lord.”
