Do Beatrice and Eugenie Get Criticized More Than Meghan and Kate?
The royal family is under constant scrutiny from tabloids and members of the public. While being wealthy and famous certainly seems like it would be enjoyable, the tradeoff for privacy and peace would be difficult to maintain.
For Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who have been in the spotlight ever since they were born, finding balance has been hard. As granddaughters of Queen Elizabeth, the princesses have all the privilege that their station demands – but has it really been worth it?
What do Beatrice and Eugenie do?
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are the daughters of Prince Andrew, one of the queen’s sons, and Duchess Sarah Ferguson. When the princesses were born, Beatrice in 1988 and Eugenie in 1990, it was cause for national celebration.
Everyone loved the royal couple and their children and thought Prince Andrew and Duchess Sarah Ferguson were the perfect couple. Sadly they split in 1992 after a huge scandal involving the duchess and her financial advisor. While the incident caused the royal family a good deal of shame at the time, both Prince Andrew and Ferguson have been able to move past it and co-parent their daughters successfully.
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are not working royals. This means they don’t represent the royal family at events like charity balls and media events.
They both have careers outside the royal family and have even lived in the United States for a time. They also aren’t photographed very often. When they are, it’s usually when they attend a legitimate family function like a wedding or baptism ceremony.
For this reason, the public doesn’t feel like they know Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice as well as they know other royal women like Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle.
Beatrice and Eugenie receive a lot of criticism
Sadly, members of the public and press have not always been kind to the princesses over the years. Their fashion, in particular, has drawn some comments from trolls online, especially after Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding, when they arrived at the ceremony wearing fascinator hats.
Part of royal protocol dictates that members of the family not get too candid with the press, but a recent report reveals that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have been affected by the negative attention.
The report states that while the princesses have found it difficult to deal with comments about their weight and fashion choices over the years, they have finally started to accept that it’s part of the package – even if they do choose to stay under the radar most of the time.
Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton get even more attention
Both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are working royals, and thus, appear at many more royal functions than Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. They long ago committed to being in the spotlight much more than the two princesses and have to deal with a lot of criticism as a part of that.
On the flipside, since they are more public figures, both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have legions of fans that sing their praises online and on social media.
All in all, the lives lived by Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice seem to be a worthwhile tradeoff – they get to enjoy a lot more privacy in their private lives than either Meghan Markle or Kate Middleton, although they are less “famous.”
The bullying they have experienced online is regrettable, but it seems to be the price that anyone who is moderately in the spotlight must pay. As the years progress and Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice continue to grow and evolve into their roles, it will be interesting to see how (and if) the public’s perception shifts.
