‘Doc Martin’ Starring Martin Clunes to End After 10th Season: ‘The Time Has Come to Say Goodbye to Portwenn’

The recent announcement that BBC hit dramedy Doc Martin, starring Martin Clunes, would definitely be returning for a 10th season was met with excitement and enthusiasm by fans.

Unfortunately, that was followed by discouraging news for the popular series.

The forthcoming 10th season of Doc Martin, it has been reported, will be its last.

From its first season (“series” to British viewers), Doc Martin has captured the imagination of its fans. Martin Clunes, 58, in a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, discussed his hopes early on for the series to be a success and a long-running one at that.

“Definitely we didn’t want this to be a solo series the first outing; we planned to go on,” he said. “But it’s always performance related — enough people have to watch. Of course, you could never predict that it would have the success or the longevity that it has had, which has been really delightful.”

“Although Caroline’s husband reminded me that at the wrap party of the first series, standing outside the village hall with a bottle of beer in my hand, [I was] saying, “You know what? I’d be quite happy if I were doing this in 10 years’ time.”

The new 10th season was just announced

The show’s stars have been talking up the forthcoming season. The news caught fans by surprise considering that it seemed the show, seen on Acorn in the US, wasn’t getting renewed after its ninth season.

As The Express reported recently, Joe Absolom, Portwenn’s Al Large on Doc Martin, told Virgin Media BAFTA’s Q&A panel, “I hear we go [filming] in March,” he said. “That would be season 10. In theory, we go March, if all is well, all being good.”

And show director Nigel Cole also confirmed the news of another season, The Express said.

“There will be a season ten. We’re working on it. It’s official, we are doing it,” he said at the Cornwall Film Festival in 2019.

And it was just announced ‘Doc Martin’s 10th season will be the show’s last

Sadly, the series about the grumpy village doctor, his beloved Louisa, and the quirky residents of Portwenn is coming to an end.

In a statement, Martin Clunes and his wife and show producer, Philippa Braithwaite said, “We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin. When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have. The series has avid fans both in the United Kingdom and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time.”

“However, after 16 years, we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn. We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it.”

We’ll miss Doc Martin but can’t wait to see how all the loose ends get tied up in Portwenn!
