‘Doctor Strange 2’ Villain: Marvel Eyeing Keanu Reeves, David Tennant, Matt Smith
Now that Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man have bid the MCU farewell, attention has been diverted to the remaining Avengers — those who came to the party a bit later — and still have one or multiple installments left in the MCU. Doctor Strange, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role and Tilda Swinton slaying the Ancient One, has become a new fan-favorite. Thus, excitement for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness just keeps building.
First, fans found out that WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2 will be intimately connected — taking a stab at an intricate cross-conversation between the silver and small screen — leading many to wonder if Scarlet Witch was destined to go full Dark Phoenix in the Strange movie. Would she become the antagonist in Multiverse of Madness? The theory grew from the House of M comic series, in which Wanda creates a fantasy family for herself and Vision. Though alluring, recent reports suggest that Nightmare is destined to be the time traveler and reality shifter’s next foe.
Nightmare is the evil ruler of the Dream Dimension — a place tormented people wind up while asleep. The villain usually appears with a paper-white skin tone, messy green hair, a ragged cape, and a bodysuit. In comic book lore, Doctor Strange crosses Nightmare’s path after a man comes to Strange to tell him about his odd dreams.
Strange quickly learns about Nightmare, the man who imprisons tortured souls in this dreamscape; this one tortured man, in particular, murdered someone. Nightmare imprisons them; Strange frees them. All is well and dandy until Nightmare winds up in Strange’s dreams, and you get the idea. The big question here: who will play the iconic villain?
Reports indicate Keanu Reeves, David Tennant, and Matt Smith are all in the running for Nightmare in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
According to We Got This Covered, Keanu Reeves has been added to Marvel’s wishlist for the Doctor Strange 2 villain. The same source who informed We Got This Covered that Taskmaster would be the villain in Black Widow and that the Black Knight and Moon Knight were coming to the MCU, told the outlet that Keanu Reeves is, once again, highly desired. Marvel Studios has been trying to snag Keanu Reeves for years; will he finally make his way to the franchise as Nightmare; just dye his hair green, and we’re good to go.
While Keanu Reeves is one of the main contenders, We Got This Covered also noted that earlier reports implied David Tennant and Matt Smith were in the running. David Tennant is most known for his starring roles in Doctor Who and Good Omens. Matt Smith — also known for starring in Doctor Who — has appeared in The Crown and is set to appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Terminator Genisys.
Who is most likely to get the role? With DC and Marvel going head-to-head for Keanu, will Reeves return to Constantine and pass on Nightmare? Or, will Reeves, at last, join the MCU and satisfy fans spanning the globe? Is Reeves too important for one Marvel movie? Reports indicate that the studio is considering him for many roles; thus, would Nightmare go to one of the Doctor Who stars, leaving Reeves to take on a super destined for a few movies? All we know right now: these three actors seem to be at the top of the Nightmare list.
