‘Doctor Who’: Here’s Why The Series Needed The Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker
Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor caused a variety of reactions within the fan base. While many Whovians were excited for the change, some felt it was too much. However, supporters argue that the show needed a change like this one.
Of course, every fan is entitled to their opinion and reaction to the casting. Not every Doctor is going to be for everyone and that’s okay. The good thing about Doctor Who is that it changes so often. So if the Thirteenth Doctor isn’t to your taste, wait a while and perhaps the next Doctor will appeal to you.
There are, however, many things that are appealing about the Thirteenth Doctor. There are aspects that Whittaker brings to the role that are all her own or put a unique spin on a characteristic The Doctor already had. Though some fans may not be too fond of her — at least, not yet — still others are ecstatic at the breath of fresh air that she brings to the show.
What do some fans dislike about The Thirteenth Doctor?
Let’s address the elephant in the room. There are some fans who dislike Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor simply because she is a woman, which is somewhat understandable. Change can be scary.
However, in Whittaker’s own words, “Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.” Change can be scary, yes, but change can also be exciting. So don’t fear, Doctor Who fans, having a woman as The Doctor doesn’t change the role too much.
Doctor Who is still the same show it always was. It’s just another regeneration. No doubt in time fans will get used to the Doctor being a woman, especially if Jodie Whittaker sticks around for a while. We hope that she does and that some fans who haven’t yet come around to seeing a woman in the main role will change their minds.
The Thirteenth Doctor is less intimidating than some others
There are also some fans who dislike the writing for season 11 because they think the Thirteenth Doctor is too happy and that she doesn’t have the gravitas necessary for the role. Those are understandable concerns.
Compared to her predecessors, especially the Twelfth Doctor, the Thirteenth Doctor is not too intimidating. Yet there are moments that show her strength, like when she confronts Krasko in “Rosa” and the Dalek in “Resolution.” So fans shouldn’t worry about this either. Especially as Jodie Whittaker settles more into the role and the writers do as well, there will most likely be more moments of strength from Thirteen.
What does Jodie Whittaker bring to the role?
According to showrunner Chris Chibnall, Whittaker is “an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature” who brings “loads of wit, strength, and warmth to the role.” His words are absolutely right. During season 11, Whittaker proves that she can be funny, inspiring, and caring, which are all qualities that a Doctor on Doctor Who needs.
In addition to these positive qualities, Whittaker proved during season 11 that she can handle sci-fi stories and also handle the emotional aspects of Doctor Who. The Doctor can’t always save everyone, as is proven in episodes like “Rosa” and “Demons of the Punjab.” Whittaker can show The Doctor’s conflicting emotions at knowing that she has to let things happen the way they’re supposed to but also wanting desperately to help.
Whittaker said when she was announced as The Doctor officially, that “it’s more than an honor to play The Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything The Doctor stands for: hope.” Whittaker’s Doctor is definitely very hopeful and many fans are likely glad. Doctor Who gives hope to so many people.
How does The Thirteenth Doctor bring hope?
The Doctor teaches fans that there is somehow always hope. In the words of the Thirteenth Doctor, “People prevail. Hope prevails.” The Doctor also believes that “Love is a form of hope. And like hope, love abides, in the face of everything.”
Both of these powerful quotes remind fans that hope is always there, even if it may be difficult to find at times. The Thirteenth Doctor is not the first Doctor to bring hope to fans, and will certainly not be the last.
Many fans would argue that hope is one of the key aspects of The Doctor. Though the Twelfth Doctor seemed to have lost his hope for a while, he did get it back. The Thirteenth Doctor is just living up to Twelve’s words: “Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind.”
And fans will likely be glad in the end that Thirteen is so happy and hopeful.
