When the Thirteenth Doctor and her friends Ryan Sinclair, Graham O’Brien, and Yasmin Khan arrive at the Tranquility Spa, everything seems peaceful. Ryan goes to check out the free stuff that the spa is offering. Graham sits down and relaxes, while Yasmin, known as Yaz to her friends and to many fans, checks out the pool. While there, she meets an older couple, Benni and Vilma.

Ryan, meanwhile, is making friends of his own after getting shocked by a vending machine that leaves him sick. The Doctor manages to get the virus out of him, but it still affects him a bit. While he’s recovering, he meets a young woman named Bella and they get to talking and flirting. Eventually, the spa’s alarms start going off and the Doctor sets out to find out what’s wrong.

Traps in ‘Doctor Who’: ‘Orphan 55’

While everyone is driven inside by the alarms, the Doctor is investigating. She follows this woman who looks like a cat named Hyph3n. Hyph3n seems concerned and the Doctor wants to know why, as well as why there’s such a secure lock on what’s supposed to be a linen closet. She gets inside, using some psychic paper, and meets the owner of the spa, Kane.

It is then she finds out that there are creatures called Dregs attacking the guests in the spa. She manages to repel the monsters, at least for a while, just in time to save Ryan and Bella, who are hiding from one of them. Once the threat has passed, the Doctor finds out that the spa is built on an orphan planet, one that is uninhabitable. Benni is missing and Vilma is worried, so the remaining guests at the spa head into Dreg territory to find him.

Plot twists abound in this episode of ‘Doctor Who’

Everyone ends up falling into a trap, and Benni asks Vilma to marry him and someone to shoot him. The remaining spa guests have to flee the Dregs on foot, and Vilma doesn’t survive either, sacrificing herself to the Dregs so that the others can escape. Yaz is very upset by Vilma’s death but doesn’t have much time to process it as they all have to continue fleeing. They also find out, while on their way back to the spa, that Kane is Bella’s mother and that Bella wants to destroy her mother’s work because of how absent she was.

Oh, and this supposedly “orphan” planet that the spa is on? It’s Earth. A future Earth destroyed by climate change and nuclear war. After helping repair the teleport, the Doctor and her friends are transported back to the TARDIS.

Bella and Kane stay behind to fight the remaining Dregs, but not before Bella kisses Ryan before he leaves with Yaz, Graham, and the Doctor.
