When someone is both the creator and the star of a series, they often end up playing some version of themselves. On I’m Sorry, Andrea Savage plays a character, Andrea Warren, who happens to be a comedy writer herself. So is she playing herself? Not exactly.

Who is Andrea Savage?

You may not know her by name, but if you’re a fan of comedic series and films, chances are you’ll recognize her face. Savage has starred in hilarious films such as Step Brothers and The House. But she’s perhaps best known for her work on TV. Savage has had roles on Rob Thomas’ shows Party Down and iZombie. She starred on both The Hotwives of Orlando and The Hotwives of Las Vegas, which are parodies of the Real Housewives series. And she had an important arc on Veep in which she played the president.

She plays Andrea on I’m Sorry

Though she’s been in many other projects, this is the first show that Savage has created. She stars as Andrea Warren, a comedy writer living in Los Angeles with her husband, Mike (Tom Everett Scott, That Thing You Do!) and young daughter, Amelia (newcomer Olive Petrucci). The show follows Andrea in her everyday life, trying to be herself in a world of parents where her particular brand of dirty comedy isn’t exactly welcome.

Is the character based on her own life?

In a way, yes, Andrea on I’m Sorry is Andrea Savage. Like her character, she is married and has a daughter. Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, Savage said Andrea is, “a heightened version” of herself.

Savage says that the show is “based on real stories from [her] life.” “I like to do stuff that’s based in reality — I think that is what I am most proud of about the show,” she says. “It’s funny, but it involves aging parents or it involves divorce or it involves friendship, and it really is about something real, and I really wanted to make sure they weren’t going to be fluffy, cliche stories and I’d become a caricature.”

Who else is in I’m Sorry?

In addition to Savage, Scott, and Petrucci, there are many recognizable recurring actors on I’m Sorry. Kathy Baker (Picket Fences) plays Andrea’s mom, Sharon. Nelson Franklin (Veep, Black-ish) plays her brother, David. In Season 1, Judy Greer and Gary Anthony Williams portrayed fellow parents, while Jason Mantzoukas frequently appeared as Andrea’s writing partner, Kyle. Season 2 has brought with it some new faces, including Lennon Parham (a parent of a classmate of Amelia’s) and Scott Aukerman (another writing partner of Andrea’s).

Season 2 is on truTV now

The first season, which consists of 10 episodes, aired in 2017. It’s currently available to watch on Netflix. There was a bit of a delay, but Season 2 began in Jan. 2019, and will also have 10 episodes. You can watch Season 2 on Wednesdays on truTV.

Will there be a season 3 of I’m Sorry?

There’s no word yet as to whether I’m Sorry will be renewed for a third season, but there’s certainly reason to hope. As long as Savage has personal stories to mine from her own life, we’ll keep watching.
