Does Prince William Get Along With Kate Middleton’s Parents?
Middleton has been embraced by the royal family over the years but many have questioned how her family feels about William and how the future king feels about his in-laws. Here’s the answer to that, plus why the Duchess of Cambridge‘s mother was blamed for one of the couple’s past breakups.
Why William didn’t ask Michael Middleton for permission to marry his daughter
William admitted that when he decided to propose to Middleton he broke the age-old engagement tradition and did not ask for her father’s permission to marry his daughter.
“I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first, and then the realization he might actually say no came to me. So I thought if I ask Kate first, then he can’t really say no,” the prince revealed.
After William popped the question, he spoke to Michael and realized that he didn’t have anything to worry about as he and his wife, Carole, were delighted about the news. In fact, following the couple’s official engagement announcement, Michael read a statement about how happy he was for the couple and how fond he was of his daughter’s fiancé.
Did Carole Middleton’s past have anything to do with one of their breakups?
In 2018, reports surfaced blaming Carole for one of the William and Kate’s past breakups. Former Sun editor Duncan Larcome believes that Carole’s previous profession is why the couple split in 2004.
In his book William & Kate: The Journey, Duncan opined that Carole’s background as a flight attendant did not sit well with some people in William’s inner circle. He wrote that because of her mother’s one-time profession, people would call Kate “doors to manual” whenever they saw her and eventually urged the prince to break up with her.
The palace later denied that Carole’s one-time profession had anything to do with her daughter and William’s brief split.
The promise William made to Middleton and how he gets along with her family today
Before they got married, Middleton was worried that by joining the royal family she would have to leave her own family behind but the prince assured her that would never happen.
In August 2018, Michael and Carole vacationed with their daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids on the private Caribbean island of Mustique. William has also invited them to many royal events including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, the Royal Ascot, and the queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
