Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson
One thing many have wondered is if the Duchess of York still wears her engagement ring today. Here’s the answer to that plus why Fergie’s sister-in-law, Princess Diana, continued to wear hers after she and Charles separated.
Does Fergie still wear her engagement ring?
The prince and Ferguson announced their engagement on March 16, 1986, and the world got to see the rock Andrew proposed with. The ring was a large Burmese ruby surrounded by 10 diamonds which formed a flower pattern on a yellow gold band.
“We came to the mutual conclusion that red was probably the best color for Sarah.,” the prince told the media during their announcement. “That’s how we came to the choice of the ruby. The extra bits around the outside, we wanted something that was slightly unconventional.”
The pair separated in 1992, but Ferguson continued to wear her ring for years after that. She was spotted with the sparkler on her hand on Dec. 7, 1995. Photographers snapped shots of the
The following year, Fergie had it on again when Princess Eugenie started the new school. However, the duchess of York has not been seen wearing the ring since 2001.
Why Princess Diana still wore hers after she and Charles separated
Like Ferguson, Princess Diana wore her sapphire engagement ring years after she split from Prince Charles. She also wore her wedding band until the pair officially divorced in 1996.
Marie Claire noted that the reason why the princess kept wearing her rings was “out of respect for her sons.” Prince William and Prince Harry were still young at the time of their parents’ separation and because Diana wanted to keep things as normal as possible for them, she continued to wear the jewelry.
She was spotted without it for the first time at a movie premiere in London in 1996.
Where are the rings today?
While it is not known where Ferguson keeps her ring today everyone knows where Princess Diana’s ring is.
In 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his mother’s stunning piece of jewelry. Diana’s ring though was actually left for Harry but he gave it to his brother to use when he popped the question.
Seven years later, Harry asked Meghan Markle to marry him with a custom-made ring that included diamonds from Diana’s personal jewelry collection.
