Don Lemon’s road to coming out
In 2011, after many years in the public eye, Lemon told the world he was gay in an interview with the New York Times.
At the time, he spoke of his struggles as a black gay man.
“It’s quite different for an African-American male,” he said. “It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You’re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black
His coming out was prompted by the upcoming release of his book, Transparent.
The book was actually just supposed to be a short, inspirational piece that was not at all personal.
“It was supposed to be a little pamphlet,” Lemon told the Times. “You know: say your prayers; have a good, hearty handshake; say good morning to your boss.”
But once he started putting pen to paper, he realized that he had so much more to say and it was time for him to start living in his truth.
“I think it would be great if everybody could be out,” he continued. “But it’s such a personal choice. People have to do it at their own speed. I respect that. I do have to say that the more people who come out, the better it is for everyone.”
He went on to talk about how seeing more happy gay people in his youth would probably have helped him be comfortable with himself sooner.
“I think if I had seen more people like me who are out and proud, it wouldn’t have taken me 45 years to say it, to walk in the truth.”
