Donald Glover Needs to Come Back to ‘Star Wars’

Whether it’s as a rapper, series creator, comedian, or actor, Donald Glover is one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood. From his start on NBC’s Community, to his Grammy-winning rapper alter ego, Childish Gambino, and his critically acclaimed FX series Atlanta, Glover has always been a fan favorite.

In 2018, he took on the role of Lando Calrissian, playing a younger version of the beloved character in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Now fans are eager for him to return to the franchise.

Glover was a huge Star Wars fan before he ever joined the franchise. In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he revealed that when he found out a young Han Solo movie was in the works, he immediately contacted his agent to express his interest in potentially playing Lando.

While his agent didn’t think he had much of a chance, Glover landed the role and celebrated it in a unique way.

“The day I found out I got it, I remember I bought like a whole pizza and went home and watched The Empire Strikes Back,” Glover said, according to CinemaBlend. “That was definitely the beginning, but then I just watched a bunch of other cool ’70s stuff that I thought would be his kind of style.”

No one else in the Star Wars galaxy is as smooth, debonair, or charming as Lando Calrissian. No one can compete with his impeccable style, either. Billy Dee Williams brought the character to life, first appearing in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, followed by Return of the Jedi in 1983.

As one of the most popular characters in the franchise, Glover had big shoes to fill. So before filming began on Solo: A Star Wars Story, he met with Williams for some advice about playing the iconic character.

“It was really, really relaxed,” Glover told Entertainment Weekly. “He was great. I mean, I had a lot of questions. And then he just told me, just be charming. And so, I was like, ‘Okay!’ I just kind of did that. He said, ‘Just be interested in things.’ Lando has, I wouldn’t say eccentric, but eclectic tastes. So I tried to work that into the role as much as possible.”

While he took major inspiration from Williams, Glover also tried to make the character his own, saying the same interview:

“I always like seeing younger characters when they are in younger times because it tells a lot about how they got to where they are. Like, when I was a teenager I felt like I knew a lot, but I didn’t. By the time we meet him in Empire Strikes Back, he owns the city already. So, I wanted to show the person he was before that was even possible. Like, I don’t even know if he thought that was possible at the time.”

Fans can’t get enough of Donald Glover as Lando

Replacing Williams was no easy task, but fans and critics alike thought he played the role to perfection. Critics praised his portrayal, saying that he was the best part of an otherwise mediocre movie.

Meanwhile, fans shared their Lando love in a Reddit thread. Many users said they thought he was perfect as a young Lando and played the part great. Another user said that they hope to see Glover as a young Lando again sometime soon, before he gets too old to believably be younger than Williams was when he originated the role.

Could fans get their wish? Recently, there have been rumors about Lando getting his own spinoff series on Disney+. It’s unknown whether Glover or Williams would be involved, as any details remain firmly under wraps.
