Doria Ragland Might Spend Christmas With the Royals — Here’s Why It Breaks Tradition

Meghan Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, has been invited to spend Christmas dinner with the royal family. Ragland was the only member of Meghan’s family to attend the royal wedding, so it shows the mother and daughter are extremely close. Now, Queen Elizabeth has extended a Christmas invite to Ragland, which strays from royal tradition.

Meghan moved thousands of miles from her mother after she married Harry

Meghan had always been very close with her mother growing up. But when she committed to spending forever with Harry, she also committed to living full time in the United Kingdom. This meant that Ragland would no longer be as close to her daughter. Day to day, it seemed like a sacrifice both of them were willing to make. But when it comes to holidays, such as Christmas, Meghan didn’t want to be without her mom.

Meghan and the queen have become close since she married Harry

Since Ragland isn’t around full time, Meghan has had a chance to bond with the queen. She supposedly hit it off with the queen’s dogs. This was the first signal to the queen that this woman was good for her grandson. She also apparently used ancestry.com to research the ancestry that would impress Prince Philip. Meghan did her homework, and it worked for the queen. Elizabeth reportedly gave her blessing instantly when Harry wanted to wed Meghan, and she even allowed the couple to break traditional royal protocol when planning their big day.

Now, the queen has invited Meghan’s mother to Christmas dinner

The royal family spends Christmas at Sandringham each year. But it’s always an exclusive family event. When Kate Middleton and Prince William were dating, Kate was not allowed to attend the Christmas festivities, even though she and William had been together for years at that point. But last year, when Meghan and Harry were only engaged, the queen invited Meghan to attend the holiday. Now, the queen appears to have broken another royal tradition: She has invited Meghan’s mother to also spend the holiday with the family.

Sources close to the royal family say the decision was not meant to snub Kate in any way. The queen has taken a liking to Meghan, and inviting her mother to spend the holiday can be seen as a sign of respect. Plus, the queen knows that Ragland is the family member to whom Meghan is closest.

This is non-traditional to royal holidays

The royal family has always had a staunch stance on non-relatives attending family holidays. It simply wasn’t allowed, as could be seen with Kate needing to marry Will before she could get the official invite. But Meghan already seems to have broken several royal rules since she became a member of the family, so what’s one more? If the queen gives her blessing, virtually anything is allowed. Plus, it may be a step in the right direction — the royal family may finally be loosening up a bit on those age-old traditions. There hasn’t been any confirmation yet that Ragland has accepted the invitation, but we can’t see any reason why she would deny such a special invite.
