‘Dr. Dolittle’ Star Kyla Pratt Reacts to Robert Downey, Jr. Trailer
Robert Downey, Jr. is your new Dr. Dolittle, the physician who can talk to animals. Universal just released the trailer to his film, showing Dolittle (Downey) on an ocean voyage with his talking animals. If you grew up in the late ‘90s and ‘00s, Eddie Murphy was your Doctor. Murphy starred as a veterinarian who could talk to animals in two movies, and his movie daughter Kyla Pratt took over for three more sequels since she inherited the talent from her father.
Pratt spoke to Showbiz Cheat Sheet about her new Lifetime Christmas movie No Time Like Christmas. We’ll have more with her this weekend as the film premieres Sunday. Yes, Lifetime is getting started on Christmas that early! But first we got her reaction to Robert Downey, Jr.’s Dolittle. Universal will release the film January 17, 2020.
‘Dr. Dolittle’ existed before Kyla Pratt
Eddie Murphy and Kyla Pratt’s film was not the first Dr. Dolittle either. The first movie adaptation of the Hugh Lofting novels came out in 1967, but Pratt’s fans still think of her as the heir to the Doctor throne.
“It’s so funny because there’s so many people on social media that have been sending me messages like, ‘Did you approve of this? Are you in this?’” Pratt said. “I’m like, ‘No, you guys. I don’t have to approve of anything.’”
Kyla Pratt approves Robert Downey, Jr.
Not that anyone asked, but 10 years after her last movie, Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts, Kyla Pratt is excited to see Robert Downey, Jr. take over.
“I’m excited,” Pratt said. “I love Robert Downey, Jr. I think there’s a bunch of different animals involved in this film. I know they’ve shot so many other films that I’m a fan of. I think that Eddie would be proud.”
You can still see Kyla Pratt in five ‘Dr. Dolittle’ movies
The two movies starring Eddie Murphy came out in 1999 and 2001. Thanks to the explosion of the home video market, Kyla Pratt got to make three more: Dr. Dolittle 3, Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief and Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts.
“I actually got to do five,” Pratt said. “We did three that went straight to DVD but my favorite were the first three. We had so much fun shooting those.”
They should have asked Kyla Pratt to cameo in Robert Downey, Jr.’s ‘Dolittle’
Robert Downey, Jr. has a brand new take on Dr. Dolittle. Still, Kyla Pratt says they could have created a whole Dolittle Cinematic Universe. They probably wouldn’t have asked Pratt to reprise her role as Maya Dolittle. Dolittle 2020 is a period piece after all and Maya is modern day. Still, maybe her Dolittle family descended from his! Pratt would have happily played any role in Downey’s film.
“I wish they would’ve called me,” Pratt said. “I wish I would’ve known about it before the little preview I saw. I would’ve made a cameo or something. I would’ve just been walking in the jungle somewhere.”
