Drake Just Got Booed Off the Stage
The 33-year-old made a surprise appearance at Tyler, the Creator’s festival to the dismay of attendees who wanted to see a performance from “Thinkin Bout You” singer Frank Ocean. It had been rumored that Ocean would show up at the festival, but this proved to be false when Drake went onstage as the surprise guest instead. Audience members made their disappointment known by chanting “We want Frank” during Drake’s set, according to Newsweek.
‘Do you want me to keep going or not?’
Drake forged ahead and performed a number of songs. But as his set went on, audience members continued to demonstrate how unhappy they were that Ocean was not the one performing.
“Do you want me to keep going or not?” Drake asked the crowd, according to a video clip posted on social media. The crowd replied with shouts of “no.”
“Like I said, I’m here for you. If you want me to keep going, I’ll keep going,” the Toronto native said. Once he had enough, he ended his performance by saying, “It’s been love. I go by the name of Drake, thank you for having me,” before exiting the stage.
Tyler, the Creator’s reaction: ‘Not cool’
The day after Drake’s performance, Tyler, the Creator took to Twitter to share his feelings on what happened. The 28-year-old “Earfquake” rapper changed his bio on the site to read “embarrassed by my fans right now.”
In a series of tweets to his more than 40,000 Twitter followers, the California-born musician responded to the booing incident.
“I thought bringing one of the biggest artist on the f***ing planet to a music festival was fire!” he wrote. “… Some created a narrative in their head and acted out like a**holes when it didn’t come true.”
Tyler, the Creator continued, calling those at the front of the stage “mad rude.” “Y’all represented me and Flog to my guest and made us look sooo entitled and trash,” he said.
The rapper called the incident an example of “mob mentality” and “cancel culture in real life.”
He also thanked Drake for showing up “because he did not have to come at all.” Tyler, the Creator added that the rapper left before performing his song, “Hotline Bling.”
Fan reactions to Drake getting booed
Looking at the hashtag “CampFlogGnaw” on Twitter, many people agreed that the crowd treated Drake poorly.
“Drake was f***ing lit thank you @tylerthecreator and f**k you to all the fans that booed Drake off. Bunch of ungrateful f***s ruined it not only for myself, but I’m sure for Drake and Tyler,” one person who attended Drake’s festival performance wrote.
Another echoed the sentiment: “I bet in 2012 Tyler never woulda thought he’d have Drake headline his festival and y’all really booing his special guest. I bet Tyler more hurt than drake. Ungrateful af.”
Will Drake perform at next year’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival after this crowd’s reaction? He could say, “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” making a reference to his hit song, and decide to skip it.
