Duggar Followers Are Changing Their Tune About Jill Duggar’s Husband, Derick Dillard
We’ve been following Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 kids for years. And now, it’s Jill Duggar who’s taking over the spotlight. While Jill was long known as one of the major rule-followers in the Duggar household, it seems she’s starting to break away from her family. And it’s her husband, Derick Dillard, who’s spilling all the juicy details about what’s going on behind the scenes.
While Jill and Derick’s followers are waiting for more information regarding their standing with the rest of the Duggars, we can’t forget that Derick has a sordid past that turned many Duggar followers off to him years ago. Now, however, he might be changing their minds. Here’s what his followers are telling him now after he took another step toward modernity.
Derick Dillard fell out of favor with Duggar fans after his Twitter outburst
Duggar fans are well-aware that Jill and Derick are no longer regularly featured on Counting On. And it seems Derick’s Twitter activity of the past is partially to blame.
Back in August 2017, Derick took to Twitter to express transphobic sentiments against his TLC co-star, Jazz Jennings. “What an oxymoron… a ‘reality’ show which follows a non-reality. ‘Transgender’ is a myth. Gender is not fluid; it’s ordained by God,” Derick tweeted. And this was just the beginning of his online assault on Jennings.
Once TLC saw what was going on, they made an announcement that Derick would no longer be affiliated with the network. But Derick now claims there’s a whole lot more fans don’t know. He took to his Instagram at the end of 2019 to suggest that he and Jill were actually pressured by TLC to continue filming Counting On even when they didn’t want to. So it’s possible his transphobic comments were a stunt to get him fired, but we can’t say for sure.
Derick’s followers are proud he and Jill Duggar are breaking away from the other Duggars
After the transphobic commentary, many were turned off to Derick completely. But he seems to be making a comeback. At the end of 2019, Derick took to his Instagram to call out Jill’s family. He claimed he and Jill no longer see the other Duggars very often because they need permission from Jim Bob before going over to the big family home. And Derick’s also expressed that he’d love to write a tell-all book detailing the truth about what goes on in the Duggar household.
Derick seems to be making even more strides to keep fans in his favor. He told an Instagram follower he’d love for them to attend his church even if they’re LGBTQ. And he and Jill also made the major decision to put their 4-year-old son, Israel, into the public school system.
“That is so great. As an educator I can’t tell you how important it is for children to be in a place where they are with other children their own age,” one of Derick’s followers commented on his post about Israel. “It’s so good for them and good for you Mama and Dad for seeing the importance of this.”
Some still aren’t excusing Derick’s bad behavior
Many are now supportive of Derick and Jill breaking free. But that doesn’t mean anyone’s accepting of his phobic online behavior. It seems many of Jill and Derick’s followers are hopeful for their family’s future, but they hope Derick also learns from his hateful mindset.
“Reminder that people are complex and having some evils beliefs does not mean they are not also capable of doing and saying some good things too,” one Reddit user noted about Derick.
“Tbh I don’t think highly of Derick for a number of reasons, but not a single one negates that putting Izzy in school is an objectively good thing,” another Reddit user wrote.
“It’s true that Derrick Dillard is a transphobe and it’s true that it’s good that Jill is teetering on the brink of leaving a religious cult in a way that makes me relieved for her … and it’s good that she’s putting her children in public school and giving them a chance to be exposed to a type of world she was never exposed to,” another noted.
It seems many are softening their opinion of Derick and Jill. We’re hoping Derick can continue to redeem himself by learning, listening, and apologizing for past actions.
