Dwayne Johnson Reacts to Sonic the Hedgehog Calling Him Out In New Trailer
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s new movie, Jumanji: The Next Level just opened at number one this weekend. The sequel reunites Johnson’s video game avatar Smolder Bravestone with the other Jumanji avatars played by Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. He probably never expected to be in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie too.
The film’s official Twitter account released a new trailer in which Sonic calls out The Rock by name. A few hours later, Johnson took to his Twitter @TheRock to respond. The movie opens February 14.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ was a game before Dwayne Johnson was The Rock
Sonic the Hedgehog was the flagship game of the Sega Genesis video game system. Genesis debuted in the U.S. in 1989 and its new gaming power rivaled the Nintendo Entertainment system. Early games for Genesis included Altered Beast (not a bad candidate for a Dwayne Johnson movie), Space Harrier II and Ghouls and Ghosts.
What Genesis didn’t have was its own icon, like Nintendo’s Mario. They got that with Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue hedgehog who could run really fast and roll like a supersonic bullet. The player would traverse through side-scrolling levels collecting coins and defeating the cronies of Dr. Robotnik and ultimately the boss himself. None resembled Dwayne Johnson though.
The game was so addictive it became the game packaged with Sega Genesis. Sequels followed on Sega Genesis and Sega continued to produce games for more advanced systems. In 2019, Paramount made a movie, but…
Problems with the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie
Jeff Fowler directed the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Computer animation brings the hedgehog to life, and Jim Carrey, not Dwayne Johnson, portrays a live action Dr. Robotnik. Everything was going well until they released the first trailer in April.
Sonic fans were so disturbed by the way the character looked in live-action, particularly his human teeth, that Fowler went back to the drawing board to recreate the character. He needed a few more months to finish the movie, so the release was moved to February. With the new trailers, everyone seems to like him now, especially Dwayne Johnson.
What Sonic the Hedgehog said about Dwayne Johnson’s alter ego
The Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account released a 24-second trailer on December 14 introducing the movie’s premise. Sonic arrives in our world through a portal that caused a power surge. His first words are, “Where am I? What year is it? Is The Rock president?”
Fans have suggested Dwayne Johnson run for president. He’s not running in 2020 but he’s said he’d consider it. Could Sonic predict the future?
What The Rock said about Sonic the Hedgehog
Seven hours after Sonic name dropped The Rock, Dwayne Johnson responded on his own Twitter. It turns out The Rock played video games himself back in the Sega Genesis days. Can Dr. Robotnik smell what The Rock is cooking?
“So crazy I used to love playing Sonic in college,” Johnson wrote. “Many moons later this… life can be so damn wildly unpredictable and surreal at times.”
