‘DWTS’ Alum Kym Johnson Won Two Mirrorball Trophies With These Partners
Most fans of ABC’s reality competition Dancing With The Stars remember pro Kym Johnson falling in love with dance partner Robert Herjavec in Season 20, where the two ended up tying the knot in 2016. What viewers may not realize is that though Johnson retired from the show, she actually won the coveted mirrorball trophy not once but twice with two famous partners.
Season 9 – Dancing with Donny
In 2009, singer/entertainment Donny Osmond was paired with Johnson on DWTS. Other celebs competing included Kelly Osbourne, Melissa Joan Hart, Michael Irvin, and Aaron Carter. At the time, Osmond was thrilled that he placed higher on the show than his sister Marie, who had competed in Season 5. “I beat Marie!” he boasted to Good Morning America at the time on winning the competition with Johnson.
Marie delivered her own message to her brother when he won, saying, “We are all so proud of you. You won! Let’s never talk about this again.”
Osmond told Entertainment Weekly last year that appearing on the reality show brought in a whole new demographic for his Vegas residency show with Marie. He also apparently continued the friendly jabbing with his sister.
“What Dancing with the Stars did is open up a new multi-generational audience for us. It also kind of painted us in a corner because they expect a lot of dancing, which we do. We have eight dancers and a full orchestra,” Osmond said, adding, “And of course I rub in Marie’s face every night that I won and she lost.”
Season 12 – A win with Ward
Johnson was partnered with Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers in Season 12 of the reality show. At first, Ward revealed his teammates weren’t huge supporters of him trading his football cleats for dancing shoes. “They were so negative at first – ‘Man, you’re gonna be the first one eliminated off the show.’ But then week in and week out I’m going in there and performing and they’re giving me the support,” Ward told Access Online in 2011.“They’re like, ‘Don’t come back without the mirror ball!’ So it’s great and they fly out and show their support. It’s amazing. If you can convince football players that you can do this show and do it well, then I know I’ve arrived.”
The pair had such great chemistry on the dance floor, romance rumors started flying that Johnson and Ward were spending time together outside of rehearsals. “I try to be romantic every day I see her, but it’s not working,” Ward said in the interview. “She’s not buying it.“
“You do spend a lot of time with each other and we have fun,” Johnson added. Though a romantic relationship was never confirmed, their dance partnership paid off, where they were awarded with the mirrorball at the end of the season.
Season 20 – Got the man instead of the mirrorball
With two wins behind her, Johnson’s pairing with Shark Tank’s Herjavec showed promise. The two had instant chemistry, with the grapevine buzzing of a budding romance. On the dance floor and in interviews, Herjavec had a difficult time concealing that he was completely smitten. “I don’t do anything for publicity,” Herjavec told People in 2015. “From the moment I met her, I love hanging out with her. We are having a great time.”
Though they didn’t win the mirrorball trophy and wound up in sixth place, neither walked away empty-handed. The two married in 2016, with Johnson announcing her exit from DWTS shortly after. “I love the show and I love to still be part of it but, you know, I still want to hang up my dance shoes and what a way to end,” Johnson told Entertainment Tonight in August 2016. “It’s like, ‘thank you, Dancing With the Stars.'”
Johnson had plenty to focus on with her new husband, soon followed by the birth of their twins Hudson and Haven in 2018.
