‘DWTS’: ‘Queer Eye’ Star Karamo Brown Says Children Received Death Threats — Dishes On Sean Spicer

When it comes to constructive conversation and the search for understanding, Karamo Brown comes highly qualified. The Queer Eye star has dealt with many challenges as a minority in his life, and brings what he’s learned overcoming those difficulties to those in need of a caring listener on the show.

Now, Brown is dealing with a new challenge — starring on a show with someone who used to hold a position of power in Trump’s administration. But Brown has built bridges with those who hold opinions different from his own before. In fact, it’s one of his talents. And Dancing With the Stars won’t be any exception, he promises.

Sadly, that’s not the end of the story. While Brown and Spicer haven’t been at loggerheads, Brown has received criticism online. And what’s worse, his children have received death threats.

Death threats against his kids

When Karamo Brown learned that Sean Spicer was going to appear on Dancing With the Stars, he surely foresaw complications. One of the first criticisms he encountered was from someone condemning him for appearing alongside Spicer at all.

Brown was quick to put that to bed. He tweeted, “First, I have no say who is on the cast and didn’t find out till this morning that he is on! But I’ll tell you this… I’m excited to sit down w/ him and engage in a respectful conversation. Only way things get better is if we try to educate those who have different POV than us.”

As always, Brown remains respectful and eager to build bridges. Unfortunately, not everyone out there feels the same way. Brown revealed that one of his children encountered a harrowing situation on the street recently.

[They’re] “literally getting death threats,” said Brown of his children. “We were in Philadelphia at the time and one of my sons was with me as we were shooting season five [of ‘Queer Eye’]. He was running home because somebody was in a car chasing after him in the car screaming at him, ‘F you and your dad! You’re going to die!’”

Brown added, “My son at that point had no idea what was going on because he wasn’t keeping up; the last thing he wants to do is read about me.”

Brown revealed his son was basically on the run for seven minutes trying to avoid this person. “That’s what I don’t like. That’s the part that really makes me emotional and gets me upset. Where I have to squeeze my hands, because the Daddy protective in me is just like, ‘Don’t do that,'” explained Brown.

Karamo Brown and Sean Spicer

According to Karamo Brown, he and Sean Spicer had a few minutes to exchange hellos recently. The Queer Eye and Dancing With the Stars personality made it clear to Spicer that he wasn’t gunning for him in any way.

Brown said, “First of all, I was sort of caught off guard, because none of us knew he was on the cast, I’m going to be very honest with you. I walked in the room and I was like, ‘Oh. Umm, this is odd.’ I was expecting, like, Charo, I wasn’t expecting this person. But my natural instinct is to be kind to every human being,” said Brown of his meeting with Spicer.

“I literally said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you about politics right now because I’d like to get to know you really quickly so that we can then grow to have a respectful conversation where we can talk about this. … It was maybe a three-minute interaction,” he explained.

Brown also said, “To be honest with you, I understood why people got upset. I am not delusional,” said Brown. “You know, seeing someone lie to the American public and be a part of an administration that is hurting us, it was bad. But in the moment it was, ‘OK, here’s a chance for me to sort of [discuss this].”

Tom Bergeron sounds off

Meanwhile, host Tom Bergeron himself doesn’t seem too thrilled to have Sean Spicer on the show.

During a Sirius XM segment, Bergeron said, “My preference…would have been to avoid any political lightning rods. I think ‘Dancing’ at its best is an oasis away from all the divisiveness and all of the stuff that we’re all wrestling with right now.”

Bergeron additionally told Dancing With the Stars fans, “For me, as host, I always gaze into the camera’s lens and imagine you on the other side, looking for a two-hour escape from whatever life hassles you’ve been wrestling with. That’s a connection and a responsibility which I take very seriously, even if I occasionally season it with dad jokes.”
