‘DWTS’: Why Carole Baskin Joined the Cast After Being Disappointed in ‘Tiger King’
The cast of Dancing with the Stars 29 was released and there is one star who stands out. That would be Carole Baskin who got a lot of backlash after the release of Tiger King. She explained why she decided to join the competition after being disappointed in the series.
Carole Baskin spoke out against ‘Tiger King’
The Netflix series, Tiger King focused on the crimes leading up to the arrest of Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, also known as Joe Exotic. He was sentenced to prison for 22 years for two counts of hiring someone to murder, eight counts of violating the Lacey Act for falsifying wildlife records, and nine counts of violating the Endangered Species Act, according to the Department of Justice’s release.
The series didn’t shine a positive light on his rival, Baskin. It focused on Maldonado-Passage’s claim that she was involved with her husband, Don Lewis’ disappearance in 1997. He made it his mission to spread the rumor that she killed her husband and fed him to her tigers.
Baskin spoke out against Tiger King. She wrote a blog claiming it was full of lies and refused to appear in the reunion.
She is part of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 29
Baskin is showing no signs of slowing down. She took over Maldonado-Passage’s zoo, G.W. Zoo. Now she’ll be on season 29 of Dancing with the Stars.
She isn’t the only celebrity from a Netflix series to be in the cast. Monica Aldama, who is the coach of Navarro College’s cheerleading team featured in Cheer!, is in the cast.
Baskin’s casting quickly caused a stir for people who watched Tiger King. Why did she decide to dance?
Baskin says she’s doing it because ‘Tiger King’ dropped the ball
Baskin did an interview with Good Morning America explaining why she’s competing. She is still open about not liking Tiger King.
“Well, Tiger King really glamorized animal abusers and villainized me for trying to stop animal abuse, so I felt really betrayed by that,” she said. “But what amazed me was how many people believe that false portrayal of me without doing anything to find out who I really am. It’s been a nightmare since Tiger King aired.”
She admitted that she wants people to rethink how they see her by her performance. Baskin also said, “I really hope so, and the biggest thing for me is the longer my partner and I can stay in the running and in the competition, it will keep the cats forefront in the viewer’s eye. And to me, that was where Tiger King missed the ball. It really should’ve been focused on the animals and so I’m hoping Dancing With the Stars will do that.”
Soon we’ll see if the public’s perception will change. Season 29 premieres on Sept. 14 on ABC at 8 p.m. EST.
