Did Eddie Murphy Try and Stop Whitney Houston From Marrying Bobby Brown?
We know so much about celebrities these days because they are incredibly accessible through the internet and on social media. However, back in the day, fans had to contend with rumors, whispers and paparazzi photos. A rumor that has continued to swirl was the alleged romance between the late legendary Whitney Houston and iconic comedian Eddie Murphy.
In the late ’80s and ’90s, both Murphy and Houston were at the top of their respective careers. Though there have been whispers that they went on a few dates together, nothing has ever been confirmed. We know instead that Houston was head over heels for New Edition alum Bobby Brown, and she married the R&B star in 1992 divorcing him in 2007.
Now, the late singer’s best-friend Robyn Crawford is breaking her silence in her new book, A Song for You: My Life With Whitney Houston, and she’s revealing much more about Murphy and Houston’s relationship.
Whitney Houston was enamored with Eddie Murphy
It looks like the rumors about Houston’s short-lived romance with Murphy were true. Even when she was dating Brown — it appears that she was still fascinated with the Coming to America actor. However, according to Crawford, Murphy was not a man who could be easily pinned down. Houston “lost herself” trying to pursue the comedian. Crawford explained,
She was more interested in Eddie Murphy, but he was elusive One day when Eddie was supposed to come for dinner, I caught a glimpse of Whitney. She was wearing a black dress and low-heeled slingbacks. For a moment, I thought ‘Boy, I wish she was doing that for me. [Murphy] never showed up that night.
According to Crawford, Houston was devastated by Murphy’s rejection.
Eddie Murphy tried to stop Whitney Houston from marrying Bobby Brown
For Houston, Murphy’s rejection just meant that she turned her attention to Brown. However, it appears that the Dolemite Is My Name actor was more intrigued by the songstress than he let on. Crawford reveals that Houston got a surprise phone call from Murphy the morning of her July 18, 1992 wedding.
Crawford remembered, “[That day] Eddie Murphy called to say she was making a mistake, but she pressed ahead.” We’re not certain if Murphy was interested in Houston for himself or if he simply saw some traits in Brown that he didn’t like, but this is certainly shocking.
Whitney Houston and Robyn Crawford had a romantic relationship
It has long been speculated that Houston and Crawford had their own romantic relationship even though their friendship deteriorated in the early 2000s due to the late singer’s relationship with Brown and her struggles with addiction.
The pair met in the summer of 1980 when Houston was 17, and Crawford was 19. They worked together at an East Orange, New Jersey summer camp. Crawford confirms that the pair did have a physical relationship until Houston signed her record deal with Clive Davis at Arista in 1982. Crawford writes,
We wanted to be together. and that meant just us. She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because it would make our journey even more difficult. She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us, and back in the ’80s, that’s how it felt. I kept it safe. I found comfort in my silence.
We’re glad Crawford is able to speak her truth.
