Before a screening of her Netflix comedy special, Relatable, on May 8, 2019, DeGeneres spoke to Deadline about her talk show. She said she had feelings of being “torn” and joked “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
She added that her wife wants to her to have more time to relax and enjoy life, her brother Vance DeGeneres, would like her to continue with the talk show.
“He just feels like this is a really important time to be on television too, to put out kindness and a voice that you don’t get to hear and see a lot,” she told Deadline. “I love doing the show and I also love doing other things,” she added.
DeGeneres tweeted the fate of her talk show
Today, DeGeneres finally let her fans know if her talk show had a future. She tweeted a video announcing that the show had been renewed for three more years, according to CNN.
Doing this show has been the ride of my life,” DeGeneres wrote.
In the video, she said, “Sometimes in a relationship, you need to take a break. “But I don’t. You’re stuck with me. Because I just signed for three more years.”
She spoke to her live studio audience in the video saying, “I had gone through a tough time. I lost my career for a little while. This show was my second chance. And it turns out, it also helped other people.”
Why DeGeneres decided to continue her talk show
DeGeneres explained in the video why she decided to sign a contract for three more years. Letters were sent to DeGeneres by fans whose lives were changed by her show. She noted that she made people laugh and sometimes helped them get through chemotherapy.
“That’s why I’m going to keep doing this show,” DeGeneres said in the video. “For people like you.”
As of now, DeGeneres has completed more than 1,000 episodes of her talk show. For the next three years, expect to see the DeGeneres on your afternoon TV line-up full with the jokes and dancing that have made her show memorable and touching to so many people.
