Elton John Is Sharing Stories from His Time with the Royal Family and They Are Kind of Funny

When you think of the royal family, you probably don’t immediately think of hijinx. So, hijinx isn’t happening on a daily basis inside the palace, but apparently the royal family knows how to cut loose, and the queen might be leading the way. Queen Elizabeth II might be a completely different person in private, at least that’s what Elton John has to say. The 72-year-old entertainer has a long history within the royal family, and his autobiography, due to be released on Oct. 15, delves into that relationship. John even has a few anecdotes about Queen Elizabeth II to share, and they are rather funny.

The queen expects obedience

Queen Elizabeth II is a trailblazer in a lot of ways. She’s set herself apart from the crowd with brightly colored suits, and a mysterious, yet oddly approachable, demeanor. According to John, the queen is also a little bit spunky.

John, in his upcoming autobiography, recounts the moment he realized that the queen had an interesting sense of humor. Allegedly, while at a party, John noticed the queen discussing something with her nephew. According to John, Viscount Linley was instructed to check on his sister, who had become sick at the event. The viscount was not interested in checking up on his sibling at the moment.

The queen, however, was hearing none of it. According to John, she lightly slapped her nephew on the face, telling him that he wasn’t to argue with her, because, after all, she was the queen. Viscount Linley relented and checked on his sister, after all.

John noted that when the queen became aware of his presence, she gave him a knowing wink. He claims that while Queen Elizabeth II appears to be the picture of nobility in public, she’s rather funny in private. Somehow, that doesn’t seem hard to believe.

Elton John and Princess Diana enjoyed a close friendship.

John’s friendship with Princess Diana was a well-documented one. The pair was incredibly close for years. As a confidant, John was exposed to the inner workings of the royal family through the princess. He also became familiar with Prince William and Prince Harry through the princess, as well.

In the late 1990s, the close friends had a falling out. When John released a coffee table book with Gianni Versace that featured photos of the princess and her young sons, she was incensed. Allegedly, the princess worried the images would anger the queen, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Elton John has a soft spot for Prince Harry

While John and Princess Diana only rectified their falling out months before her death, the famed singer has a soft spot for the princess’s youngest son. In 2018, Prince Harry was honored as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People. Each honoree is written about by someone close to them. John was given the honors of writing the blurb for Prince Harry, according to Town and Country.

In the writeup, the famed entertainer reminisces on the moment he met a young Prince Harry and how much he’s grown since then. He said, “I first met an extremely shy and sweet Prince Harry at a private lunch at Kensington Palace, given by his mother Princess Diana for Gianni Versace and me many years ago. What a joy it has been to see that young boy grow to inherit his mother’s warmth, sense of humor, and courage to stand up and champion the causes he truly believes in.”

John has also been outspoken about the treatment that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have received since their marriage. John noted that he feels a need to protect the prince from the media; wishing someone had done the same for Princess Diana.
