Elton John Recalls Watching Queen Elizabeth Slap Her Nephew Across the Face, Among Other Anecdotes

Queen Elizabeth puts on a veneer of strictly proper behavior, but Elton John is revealing that when the time is right, she has a wild and humorous side. The world-renowned performer recently released his new memoir, Me, in which he tells several stories about the royal family

Elton John not only claims that he once saw Queen Elizabeth slap her nephew at a party — he also says he watched two famous actors prepare to duke it out over Princess Diana. He even detailed their falling out and eventual reunification.

Elton John watched Queen Elizabeth slap her nephew

Apparently, Elton John saw the Queen get physical at a party that included many members of the royal family. John recalls that David Armstrong-Jones, or Viscount Linley, was on the receiving end of the queen’s light slaps.

John says that Queen Elizabeth noticed Viscount Linley’s sister having a tough time at the party, as she seemed to feel unwell. The Queen asked Linley to go look after his sister, who had just left the party to rest up. It seems Linley wanted to remain at the festivities.

In a shockingly bold move, Viscount Linley apparently refused Quee Elizabeth’s request. The Queen shortly set matters straight. John wrote of the event, “When he [Linley] repeatedly tried to fob her off, the Queen lightly slapped him across the face, saying ‘Don’t’ – slap – ‘argue’ – slap – ‘with’ – slap – ‘me’ – slap – ‘I’ – slap – ‘am’ – slap – ‘THE QUEEN!’”

According to John, the Queen realized he’d witnessed her slapping Linley, and she tossed him a cheeky wink. He further wrote, “I know the Queen’s public image isn’t exactly one of wild frivolity, but . . . in private she could be hilarious.”

These two actors almost came to blows over Diana

Elton John also revealed that Princess Diana was the source of a heated argument between two famous actors. Elton John hosted a dinner party to which he invited Princess Diana, with whom he had cultivated a friendship.

Sylvester Stallone and Richard Grere were also in attendance. John alleges that Diana and Grere were rather smitten with each other — and Stallone was not happy.

“Straight away, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other,” wrote John. “She was separated from [Prince] Charles by this point, and Richard had broken up with Cindy Crawford. They ended up sitting in front of the fireplace together, locked in rapt conversation.”

John claims Stallone was watching the couple with barely hidden jealousy. Eventually, Stallone moved to confront Grere. John says Stallone exclaimed, “I never would have come if I’d known Prince f****** Charming was gonna be here.”

John goes on to say that Grere and Stallone were squared off, ready to settle their dispute physically. Meanwhile, it seems Diana had no idea it was even happening. That, or she didn’t care.

“Maybe she hadn’t realized what was happening. Or maybe stuff like that happened all the time,” he wrote.

Elton John and Princess Diana had a close friendship

Elton John revealed that he first met Princess Diana at a rather embarrassing disco. Apparently, in an effort to make sure the Queen’s finer sensibilities weren’t offended, the disco was incredibly quiet and dull.

“Because the Queen was there, and no one wanted to cause any offence to the royal sensibilities, the disco was turned down about as low as you could get without switching it off altogether. You could literally hear your feet moving around on the floor over the music,” wrote John.

It seems the two first bonded over that lame disco. “Anyway, that night in 1981, she arrived in the ballroom and we immediately clicked. We ended up pretending to dance the Charleston while hooting at the disco’s feebleness,” he explained.
