Elton John Was Escorted Offstage While Crying

Elton John is among the most famous artists in the history of classic rock. At the age of 72, he’s still touring the world. However, he had to be taken off the stage during a recent concert in New Zealand. Here’s what happened.

The show went on…until it didn’t

John took the stage at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand on Feb. 17, 2020, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Early in his performance, he told the audience he had caught walking pneumonia and was experiencing issues with his singing voice, but wanted the show to proceed anyway. It ultimately became clear John was not healthy enough to keep performing.

After performing his classic hit “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” John needed medical attention. He recovered. Later, he tried to perform the Vietnam War-themed ballad “Daniel” and found that his voice was shot.

Videos of the event posted online show the singer breaking down in tears. He told the crowd he could no longer go on. Even as he said this, his fans were cheering him on. He was escorted offstage.

Elton John apologizes

John was apologetic about the incident, posting “I want to thank everyone who attended tonight’s gig in Auckland. I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia earlier today, but I was determined to give you the best show humanly possible.”

He added “I played and sang my heart out, until my voice could sing no more. I’m disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had. Thank-you so much for your extraordinary support and all the love you showed me during tonight’s performance. I am eternally grateful. Love, Elton xx.”

John is currently slated to perform two more shows at the Mt Smart Stadium. It’s currently unclear if John is planning to reschedule the performances. His dedicated fans would likely understand if he did, given the circumstances.

Elton John calls out a security guard

This is not the first time John made headlines during the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour by surprising his audience. In Dec. 2019, he spotted a pair of security guards ejecting a woman from his show in Perth’s HBF Park. John responded with a profane rant.

As the crowd cheered him on, John said “Hey, you two security guards with the girl. F*ck off…Come on you c*nts. Morons, you both are, morons. You don’t treat girls like that. Leave her alone, you turds.”

John later expressed regret over his word choice. “I apologize for the ‘c-word,’ I just hate people being assaulted, especially women by security guards. I have a pet hate of security guards anyway.”

John has always been an outrageous artist. Maybe the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour has had a few bumps along the way. Regardless, it has still received a warm reception from fans.
