Emilia Clarke Reveals What She Yearns for in Roles Following ‘Game of Thrones’

Emilia Clarke had starred on Game of Thrones since the cultural phenomenon first graced small screens everywhere in 2011. Taking on the role of Daenerys Targaryen, the young actress went from recent drama school grad to HBO star virtually overnight. With quite the recognizable name and face, the actress has become one with the character she portrayed on the series.

Daenerys Targaryen – though closing out the show as the notorious “Mad Queen” – was formerly hailed as one of the series’ most admirable figures for several seasons. The character boasted the perfect amalgamation of quiet determination, outspoken strength, and compassion. As Emilia Clarke put it herself, the character’s turn to madness was not a representation of her core, but a result of her traumatic hurdles.

Daenerys Targaryen’s fate has been at the center of a contentious debate, for the finale, has proved divisive amongst viewers and critics alike. However, Emilia Clarke is satisfied with the ending and ready to move on to new projects.

During an interview with The New Yorker, Clarke discussed the show, how she felt about the ending, and the kinds of roles she plans to take moving forward.

Emilia Clarke wants to “learn” following ‘Game of Thrones’

When asked, “What do you see happening next? Do you only want to do small theatrical productions of Beckett in regional theatre? Or are you looking for superhero roles?,” Emilia Clarke focused on growth. The actress, mentioning her next project, explained to The New Yorker:

“I really want to learn. I’ve got a lovely job that I’m going to do with Björn Runge, who directed “The Wife,” which I thought was magnificent. It’s a small film about Elizabeth Barrett Browning.”

So, it’s clear that Emilia Clarke is less focused on the “who” regarding her future and more focused on the “what” and “how:” what she can gain from the role, how it will play into her growth as an actress, what she will discover in herself, etc.

Since Emilia Clarke won’t have any financial concerns for quite some time, it’s very possible that the actress decides to take on small, yet highly challenging roles, following Game of Thrones.

Emilia Clarke to star in Let Me Count the Ways and other works following ‘Game of Thrones’

As for the project with Bjorn Runge, Emilia Clarke is referring to her upcoming role in Let Me Count the Ways. Emilia Clarke will play in the title role, as the poet formerly known as Elizabeth Barret Browning.

The movie will follow the young writer who found international fame after self-publishing her first book at fourteen years old. Elizabeth – though suffering from a chronic condition and living life as a recluse – meets and falls in love with fellow writer Robert Browning.

The newfound romance reinvigorates the writer, and the narrative follows the love story between the two, as well as their subsequent marriage. The story is destined to be quite the heartwrenching drama, and fans will get to see Emilia Clarke take on a character quite distant from Daenerys.

Emilia Clarke is also set to star in Above Suspicion and Last Christmas; work on the former is complete, while the latter is currently in post-production. In Above Suspicion, Clarke will star as Susan Smith in a story centering on the first-ever murder conviction of an FBI agent.

According to IMDb, in Last Christmas, Clarke will play Kate, working as a young Elf for Santa in a department store. When she meets Tom, her life, up to this point filled with bad decisions, takes a turn.
