‘Emily in Paris’ Star Lily Collins Paid Homage to Iconic Carrie Bradshaw Outfit, But Says Show Isn’t the New ‘SATC’
Lily Collins stars in Netflix‘s Emily in Paris. The comedy-drama was created by Darren Star who is also the mind behind Sex and the City. Although viewers have noted similarities between the two shows, including Collins paying homage to one of Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic outfits, Collins wants everyone to know that Emily in Paris is not the new SATC.
Here’s more about that, where you may have seen Collins before, and who her famous father is.
Who is Lily Collins?
Lily Jane Collins was born on March 18, 1989 in Guildford, Surrey, England. She is the daughter of chart-topping musician Phil Collins and his second wife, Jill Tavelman. Lily’s half-siblings include actor Joely Collins and recording artist Simon Collins.
When Lily was 2 years old she appeared in the BBC series Growing Pains. A few years later, her mom and the “In the Air Tonight” singer separated and Lily moved to Los Angeles with Tavelman.
As a teen, she wrote pieces for the British magazine Elle Girl as well as Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and the Los Angeles Times. Lily acted in a few episodes of TV show 90210, and was in multiple films including The Blind Side, Mirror Mirror; The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones; and Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile alongside Zac Efron.
In September 2020, she announced that she was engaged to filmmaker Charlie McDowell.
Collins wore an updated look of Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic outfit
The Netflix series Emily in Paris is about marketing executive Emily Cooper who is from Chicago and moves to France for her job. While there, she must navigate her career and love in the City of Lights.
The show has drawn comparisons to another comedy-drama Sex and the City in which the lead character is relatable and dons an amazing wardrobe. In fact, Emily in Paris‘ costume designer is Patricia Field, the same woman who picked the attire for the ladies of SATC. In the Netflix series, Field had Emily pay tribute to one of the most memorable outfits worn by Carrie Bradshaw.
In press release for the show Field stated, “Emily’s black tulle skirt in Episode 102 is an homage to Carrie’s tulle skirt in the series finale of Sex and the City.“
Collins says ‘Emily in Paris’ is not the new ‘Sex and the City’
Collins understands why viewers are comparing the Netflix and HBO rom-coms, but says Emily in Paris is different and she wants fans to know no one is trying to recreate or reinvent the iconic Carrie Bradshaw character.
“Ultimately we didn’t want to create a new Carrie because Carrie is Carrie and Sarah Jessica Parker is Sarah Jessica Parker,” Collins explained via E! Online. “So we didn’t want to recreate anything and hopefully, Emily stands out as Emily herself. She also, you know, she loves fashion. I think to be compared to Carrie Bradshaw would probably be something that Emily would be very flattered by but I think she would never want to recreate one of her icons.”
