Emma Watson Says She’s ‘Self-Partnered’ Not Single
Emma Watson, who got her start as a child actor in the Harry Potter film franchise playing Hermione Granger, has a new term for being single: “self-partnered.” It’s what she likes to call herself ahead of her 30th birthday on April 15, 2020. Keep reading to learn what the 29-year-old actress and activist had to say about starting a new decade of her life and who she’s been romantically linked to in the past.
Watson admitted to feeling ‘stressed and anxious’ about turning 30
Appearing on the cover of the December 2019 issue of British Vogue, Watson sat down for an interview where she discussed turning 30 and the pressure often associated with that particular birthday in a person’s life.
Watson called the last year of life “tough” because she “had all these ideas” about what life at the end of her twenties was supposed to be.
“I was like, ‘Why does everyone make such a big fuss about turning 30? This is not a big deal…’” she said. “Cut to 29, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I feel so stressed and anxious.”
She continued, attributing the feelings to milestones that we’re all led to believe should happen by 30.
“And I realize it’s because there is suddenly this bloody influx of subliminal messaging around,” Watson said. “If you have not built a home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety.”
She’s ‘very happy being self-partnered’
Like Gwyneth Paltrow who popularized the term “conscious uncoupling” after using it in a statement about her split from Chris Martin to her Goop subscribers in 2014, Watson may have just done the same thing.
When talking about being single and heading toward the somewhat ominous 30-year marker, she said she thought the idea of being happy without a significant other was what she referred to as “spiel.”
“I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”
The Brown graduate with a net worth of $80 million next stars in Little Women alongside Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Timothée Chalamet among others. In theaters Christmas Day, the movie is based on the acclaimed novel by Louisa May Alcott. Explore Watson’s best movie roles here.
Who has Emma Watson dated?
Since 2006, Watson’s dating life has been documented in the press. She’s been linked to rugby players (Tom Ducker and Matthew Janney), a financier (Jay Barrymore), and Will Adamowicz, whom she met while studying at Oxford University to name a few.
Harry Potter fans lost it in 2011 when Watson revealed she had a crush on her co-star Tom Felton aka Draco Malfoy while filming the first two movies in the franchise. But they’ve both said by way of Instagram posts and interviews that they’re just friends even though fans named them “Dramoine.”
