‘Emmys 2021’: Best Actor Reactions to Nomination News — ‘Honored, Baffled, and Utterly Thrilled’

This year, the 73rd annual Emmy Awards return to an in-person event after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic put a damper on things last year. HBO Max, Apple TV, and Netflix received several nominations for shows such as Ted Lasso and The Queen’s Gambit. Nominations this year evoked some of the best reactions from actors yet.

Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for ‘Lovecraft Country’ is Jonathan Majors

Despite the show’s cancellation, Majors was a standout in the horror series and grateful for the emmy nomination. According to TV Insider, he said, 

“Oh my. Gratitude and surprise are running laps in my heart. A full-throated thank you to the nominating body. Thank you for seeing the light in the dark, and the smile in the tears of this character, Atticus Freeman, he is one of my best friends, and I’m glad you all got to meet him as well. Playing this role has changed my life, and this nomination is yet another growing and changing moment.”

Josh O’Connor received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Crown’

The Crown focuses on the royal family and O’Connor plays a young Prince Charles. “This is amazing! Thank you to the Academy for this tremendous send-off. It has been such an honor to be a part of this beautiful family for the past three years, and to share this recognition today with Emma, Olivia, Gillian, Helena, Emerald, Tobias, Peter Morgan, and the entire cast and crew of The Crown just means the world.”

Billy Porter grabbed a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in ‘Pose’

The show tells the story of ball culture in the late ’80s and early ’90s, during the AIDS crisis. Porter portrays the character Pray Tell in the series and honored at the Emmy nomination. “I am honored and humbled to have my work once again be recognized by the Academy. I stand at the intersection of art and activism, and I am forever grateful for the healing journey that Pose has been for myself, my colleagues and the world!”

Matthew Rhys received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Rhys snagged an Emmy nomination for the titular role in Perry Mason. “I’m honored to be nominated for a show of this caliber. My great thanks to the Academy for such a nomination and enormous thanks to all who worked on Perry Mason for getting me here.”

Anthony Anderson from ‘Black-ish’ is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Anderson plays Andre Johnson on the show and is humbled by his Emmy nomination. “Thank you to the Academy. I am truly humbled by this nomination and I am so thrilled for the recognition for our show and the extremely talented Tracee Ellis Ross and for an incredible six nominations!”

‘The Kominsky Method’ actor Michael Douglas snagged an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Douglas is no stranger to Emmy Award nominations, receiving a total of 10 over the years. This latest nomination comes with his role on the Netflix series, The Kominsky Method. “What a joy to finish off three seasons with these well-deserved nominations. A wonderful job by everyone,” the actor said.

The Emmys will air live starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS, but that’s not the only place you can watch the event. The awards show will also be streaming live on Paramount+.
