‘Empire’ Returns Showing Jamal and Kai’s Groundbreaking Wedding
Empire is still moving forward despite there being a lot of questions around Jussie Smollett and the show. It’s now back with Jamal and Kai’s (Toby Onwumere) wedding. Find out how the wedding came along and the latest statement about Smollett’s future on the show.
Jussie Smollett previously teased a groundbreaking storyline on Empire
The actor previously teased that something big was coming up for his character. He said it has been a long time coming to make it happen.
“It’s something that I’ve been pushing for for the last four seasons,” Smollett told The Cheat Sheet. “I knew that we had to go through all of the things that we went through with the character in order to get to the place that we are now.”
He talked about how Jamal’s past. “Jamal had a little h** spell you know what I’m saying?” he joked. “I like to call it a serial monogamous spell. But he’s found a love that’s real with no ulterior motives or anything like that and I think that is what I want to portray. That’s what I want to see, and that’s what I want other people to see.”
The actor revealed why it was important to him that this event would be included. “I want to see a healthy relationship between two gay Black men,” Smollett continued. “I want to see you know a successful relationship even if it’s a crazy world.”
This will reportedly be the first Black gay wedding on television
Empire is back and it is starting with a big affair. Jamal and Kai will be getting married in “Never Doubt I Love.” This will be the first Black gay wedding on television, according to Essence.
In the teaser, it looks like the Lyon family and friends are all there for the happy occasion. They even have a special guest with Chaka Khan who will sing at the ceremony. The singer also talked about the wedding in a clip saying “Today’s wedding is special and controversial but my answer to all that is just love is love.”
It’s unknown if Jussie Smollett will stay or leave the show
Empire might be moving forward with the storyline, but it’s still up in the air if Smollett will stay for good. Charges against Smollett have been dropped.
Co-creator Lee Daniels talked about his future on the show and if he’ll come back for Season 6. “We are in discussions about that right now,” Daniels told Entertainment Tonight. He has also revealed that he has talked to Smollett.
“I have had conversations with him and he is in a lot of pain,” he said. “If he is guilty, then I am worried about his mental health.” Only time will tell what will be the ultimate decision.
The episode will be airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
