Every Crazy Conspiracy Theory About Melania Trump
Melania Trump is, in many ways, a mysterious figure. Though she’s one of the most famous in the world, there’s a lot about her life and her personality that she keeps close to the chest.
That has, naturally, led many of us to be curious about her. And that curiosity has led to some strange ideas about what she’s really thinking and doing behind the scenes.
Here are all the weirdest conspiracy theories about Melania Trump, including one about a secret double life (page 7).
1. Home is where the heart is
- Where in the world does Melania live?
It’s pretty clear that Melania and Donald Trump have a unique kind of relationship. Photos of the pair during their rare public appearances together have made some believe they barely know each other at all.
Melania initially delayed moving to Washington D.C. with her son Barron, so he could finish his school year in New York City.
But even after they took up residence in the capitol in June 2017, rumors have swirled that she doesn’t really live in the White House at all. For what it’s worth, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the conspiracy theory “ridiculous.”
Next: This next theory would send shockwaves through Washington if it were true.
2. On her own
- Could Melania really be planning to divorce her husband?
Rumors have always run rampant about the nature of Melania’s relationship with her husband. And they reached fever pitch after allegations about his infidelity resurfaced in early 2018.
The result is an increased focus on the future of their marriage. Which, of course, has led to speculation that she might be gearing up to leave Trump — even before his tenure as president is over.
As of now, it’s all based on little more than whispers from alleged insiders. But it’s been enough for conspiracy theorists to run wild nonetheless.

3. From Russia, with love
- Maybe Melania is just a really big fan of The Americans?
The Trump family’s dealings with Russia have cast a long shadow over the president’s first years in office. And some conspiracy theorists are convinced that there’s even more to the story than we’ve been told.
There have been rumblings online that Melania is secretly working as a Russian spy. Their evidence is admittedly flimsy — she has met Russian President Vladimir Putin, and she speaks six languages (Russian, though, not being one of them).
Thus far, there’s no real evidence whatsoever that the first lady is a spy for any country.
Next: The next theory is as hilarious as it is wild.
4. Double trouble
- Will the real Melania Trump please stand up?
In October 2017, Melania accompanied her husband on a trip to visit the Secret Service training facility. They were photographed returning to the White House, where Trump stopped to briefly speak with reporters.
And some Twitter users noticed that something looked a bit off about the first lady as she stood by her husband’s side. Rumors that it wasn’t her at all, and that she had been replaced by a body double, spread like wildfire.
To date, the “Melania has a body double” conspiracy theory remains, perhaps, the funniest to emerge during her tenure as first lady. And the weirdest.
Next: This Melania conspiracy theory took on a life of its own.
5. Missing in action
- Melania Trump’s whereabouts were under wraps.
In May 2018, the White House announced that Melania had undergone surgery for a benign kidney issue. The prognosis was good — she was recovering at home, and feeling well.
But after a while — approximately 25 days, to be exact — people began to notice that she hadn’t been seen in public in quite some time. Online, speculation about her whereabouts was everywhere. And numerous conspiracy theories emerged.
One, perhaps the most macabre, was that Melania was actually near death. The White House’s lack of response, and a tweet from her official account that sounded decidedly unlike her, only added fuel to the rumors that she wasn’t able to communicate herself.
Next: Even the president couldn’t resist commenting on this conspiracy theory.
6. A (not so) uplifting theory
- Did Melania go MIA because of a bad surgery?
Another theory about Melania’s withdrawal from public eye was that she’d been the victim of a botched plastic surgery operation. The idea that a facelift gone wrong was keeping the first lady from the spotlight was, admittedly, pretty extreme.
In fact, it was called out by Trump himself when he cleared the air about his wife’s whereabouts. On June 4, 2018, Melania finally appeared at a dinner honoring Gold Star families.
And on June 6, 2018, Trump couldn’t resist calling out the media for the “fake news” about her health. He tweeted, “The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!”
But Trump forgot to mention one last conspiracy theory.
Next: The implications for this next conspiracy theory could be devastating for the Trumps.
7. Can I get a witness?
- Would Melania turn on her family like this?
One final rumor that floated around during Melania’s absence was that she’d turned on her family. Politico reported that some conspiracy theorists thought maybe she had begun working with Robert Mueller on his investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
That would, of course, be a huge bombshell if true. But, like most other conspiracy theories about Melania, there was no credible evidence at all to support the idea.
Next: Why is everyone obsessed with Melania?
8. Why are there so many conspiracy theories?
- Can the first lady ever escape all the rumors?
Conspiracy theories and politics go together like cookies and milk. But it does feel like the attention around Melania is even more intense than usual.
There’s a reason for that: from her early life in Slovenia to her private existence as first lady, there’s so much we don’t know about Melania. That drives curiosity — and when we can’t find the information we’re looking for, it only makes us wonder why.
Of course, spreading false rumors doesn’t solve anything. But it’s safe to assume that these kinds of conspiracies will continue, for better or worse, as long as Melania is in the public eye.
