Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were the whirlwind couple of 2018. From their sudden engagement to getting countless tattoos to symbolize their love, they clearly couldn’t get enough of each other. Unfortunately, their romance ended up being too good to be true.

On Oct. 14, 2018, TMZ reported that the couple had ended their engagement. People also backed up the news, with a source confirming, “It was way too much too soon.” The source added, “It’s not shocking to anyone.”

Based on how Twitter went into a frenzy at the news of Grande and Davidson’s breakup, we’d say it was definitely shocking to fans. However, looking back at the weeks leading up to their split, there were actually plenty of signs that their relationship was on the rocks.

Davidson covered up his bunny ears tattoo

On Oct. 9, Davidson stepped out with one of his most recognizable Grande-related tattoos covered up. While he once had bunny ears tattooed on his neck (in honor of Grande’s look from her Dangerous Woman album), it’s now been replaced by a black heart.

Fans may have initially been alarmed by the change, but he did get an “A” tattooed right next to the heart, so it could have simply transformed into a new ode to his lady. However, looking back, it was probably a sign of trouble on the horizon.

They dialed it back on the Instagram PDA

When Grande and Davidson first became official, they couldn’t stop showing their love for each other on social media. Therefore, it became a bit suspicious once their PDA-filled Instagram posts had stopped. Granted, Grande did claim she was stepping away from social media after a rough year, including the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, and the Manchester bombing.

Davidson also stepped away from social media, including deleting his Instagram account, due to harassment from fans. Even though they’ve both had plenty of reasons to step away from their usual Instagram activity, we wouldn’t be surprised if their impending breakup was one of them.

Grande’s emotional tweets

When Grande has been posting on social media, she’s been sharing some cryptic messages. While her messages were likely related to Miller’s death, they could have also been tied to relationship troubles. On Sept. 27, she tweeted, “can i pls have one okay day. just one. pls.”

Davidson’s jokes about them breaking up

We couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable when Davidson poked fun at the thought of breaking up with Grande on Sept. 29’s episode of Saturday Night Live. As it turns out, there was actually some truth to his jokes — whether he knew it yet or not.

“Like, if we break up, and we won’t — we will — but we won’t. I’m kidding,” he said during Weekend Update. “But like, in 10 years if God forbid that ever happened, there will be a song called ‘pete davidson’ like playing in speakers at K-Mart and I’ll be working there.”

That wasn’t the first time Davidson suggested the possibility of their split. In August, he told Variety, “I’m still convinced she’s blind or hit her head really hard. Something is going to happen, and she’s going to be like, ‘What the f*ck is this thing doing around?’ For right now, it’s rocking.”
