Every Time Kate Middleton Gave Us Major Mom Goals

Since 2013, Kate Middleton has been one of the most famous mothers in the world. As a result, everything from her pregnancy fashion to her most public parenting moments has become tabloid fodder.

With all the attention surrounding Middleton’s royal duties, it’s sometimes easy to forget that she’s still just a young woman trying to raise her three children. And she’s shown herself, on more than one occasion, to be a pretty awesome parent.

Here are all the moments that gave us mad respect for Middleton’s maternal instincts, including one that made us say “Awww” (page 6) and another that made us say, “Girl, been there” (page 9).

1. Like mother, like daughter

Middleton has, by now, definitely mastered the art of the polite wave. And by the looks of it, she’s passed that very-necessary skill to Princess Charlotte.

This sweet photo from Prince Harry and Meghan Markles’ wedding shows the Duchess of Cambridge and her daughter walking hand in hand outside the chapel. And it’s not just noteworthy because it shows us a glimpse of the pair in a relaxed, candid moment.

But thanks to Charlotte’s shy wave, it’s also a completely adorable hint that the young princess may have already received a bit of training on how to handle being in the public eye.

Most moms know that it’s a miracle if the kids make it out the door wearing the same color socks. So we have to give major props to Middleton and Prince William for managing to color coordinate the whole family — and while traveling, no less.

Of course, she no doubt has some help in the styling department. But still, getting your kids dressed and looking as dapper as Prince George and Princess Charlotte looked when the family arrived in British Columbia during a 2016 visit could not have been an easy feat.

She pulled it off in style, and made getting two toddlers onto a airport tarmac look easy, to boot.

3. Don’t you worry about a thing

The British royal family’s lifestyle often means attending events and getting special behind-the-scenes tours. And while that may sound glamorous, it can’t be easy when you’ve got your kids in tow.

That’s what makes this 2016 moment between Middleton and George so sweet and relatable. He appears to be overwhelmed during a visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo. And Kate takes the time to check in with him, even in the midst of a busy tour.

4. Magical moments

In a 2018 letter to East Anglia Children’s Hospices, Middleton revealed her favorite motherhood moments. She said, “it is the simple family moments like playing outside together that I cherish.”

So, this moment from a party during the 2016 Royal Tour of Canada feels especially meaningful. Middleton looks happy and at ease while helping George with an oversized balloon animal.

And it’s a testament to her ability to find ways to connect with her children, even when they’re thousands of miles from home.

5. Parenting priorities

Middleton has met with countless world dignitaries since becoming the Duchess of Cambridge. But even when she’s rubbing elbows with the President of the United States, she still makes time for her children.

And if you need proof, just look at this behind-the-scenes moment from the Obamas’ 2016 visit to Kensington Palace. While William and Harry chat with the former POTUS and first lady, Middleton is more concerned with George’s bedtime routine.

The fact that she managed to both entertain a sitting president and get her son off to bed at a reasonable time is, frankly, a miracle.

6. Are you seeing this?!

During the 2017 Trooping of Colour ceremony, the entire British royal family stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch a spectacular air show. And Middleton clearly enjoyed sharing the moment with Charlotte and George.

Multiple times during the show, the family were photographed taking it all in with wonder. This particular moment, in which she shared a laugh with George while Charlotte watches, enraptured, is a perfect example of how Middleton manages to make the most of big events with her kids.

7. Like herding cats

You’d think that attending your glamorous sister’s wedding would be a chance to kick back and relax. But for Middleton, it was anything but. The duchess was photographed trying to herd not just her own children, but several other flower girls and page boys into the church prior to Pippa Middleton’s wedding.

And we had to admire her poise, even as she tried to do the impossible: keep a slew of excited children from running wild on her sister’s big day.

8. A rollicking good time

Keeping your kids entertained at huge sporting events can be a real challenge. After all, they don’t really care who wins or loses, and they’re not always fans of sitting still for extended periods of time. So we have to hand it to Middleton for using a 2015 polo match as an excuse to get a little messy with George.

The two were photographed playing in the grass, far away from the main attraction. Middleton’s willingness to put her son’s happiness before her own chance to kick back and relax is totally relatable, and totally sweet.

9. Meltdown mode

Pretty much every mom has been there: Your usually well-behaved child has a total meltdown in a very public place. It’s stressful, and can end up being a huge headache for all involved (including the innocent bystanders).

So we totally felt for Middleton during her family’s 2017 trip to Germany. While Charlotte freaked out during a trip to view helicopters in Hamburg, she did what any mom would do: she set her likely exasperation aside, bent to Charlotte’s level, and tried to calm her down, while apparently reminding her it’s really not cool to scream and cry when you’re on a super-very-official tour.

10. Savoring the moment

Royal fans around the world waited with baited breath for a first glimpse of Middleton and William’s third son, Louis. And when the couple stood outside the hospital to present him to the world, it provided a perfect photo opportunity.

Even though she was on a public stage, and probably exhausted from giving birth just hours earlier, Middleton still put on a brave (and very well put-together) appearance.

And as a result, we all got a chance to see her looking lovingly at her newborn — which served as a sweet reminder that her world had changed again for the better. Middleton deserved her moment to bask, and we’re all the luckier for being able to witness it.
