The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, for the most part, dominated by men. But women finally are starting to become more and more prevalent in superhero blockbusters, and the stars who portray them are some of the most amazing out there.
If you’re looking for more material to satiate your Marvel needs, look no further than the social media accounts of these Hollywood actresses. Here are some of the digital moments where they showed the world why we should all look up to them.
When they posed for this amazing photo
We’ve recently received a veritable feast of new Infinity War images. But while heroes and heroines in costume are thrilling, this behind-the-scenes look is even better.
Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne/the Wasp), and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) posed for a group shot that Marvel shared on social media yesterday, and the internet (of course) went wild.
Next: This Marvel-ous newcomer is ready to rock.
When Larson announced her role as the first solo leading lady in the MCU
Brie Larson has been a working actress since her childhood, but it wasn’t until her Oscar-winning role in Room that she became a household name. Her social media is always full of gems, including hilarious Throwback Thursdays, firm political stances, and random thoughts that are sure to delight.
But for Marvel fans, nothing can beat her mysterious posts surrounding her impending role as Captain Marvel. Since the official Comic-Con announcement in 2016, Larson has fully embraced being a part of the MCU family.
When Thompson made Valkyrie’s sexuality canon
Thompson is a new addition to MCU, having recently starred in Thor: Ragnarok. The accomplished actress also relishes using her platform for good — and she was able to combine her interests with this particular tweet.
In comic-book canon, Valkyrie is openly bisexual, but her sexuality was never addressed in Ragnarok. However, in response to a fan’s tweet, Thompson confirmed that Valkyrie is indeed a member of the LGBTQ community, and she told Rolling Stone that she fought to keep a scene in the film that showed this.
When Gillan paid tribute to the behind-the-scenes crew
A lot goes into making any film, and the larger the scale of the film, the more people become vital to the operation. However, it’s the stars (and, sometimes, the directors and writers) who we are able to see and acknowledge, so the best actors take it upon themselves to honor the crew.
Gillan gave a nod to her hair and makeup team for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. She shared a photo of her alongside five crew members, pointing out the hard work that they put into creating what you see on screen.
When Lilly got real about health
The amount of work these actresses have to put in in order to become superheroine-level fit is intense. And though plenty of celebrity ladies are keen to share the occasional workout selfie, Lilly took it to a whole other level with #waspworkout.
Some of her posts regarding health are serious, but oftentimes, she’s quick to reveal her silly side on Instagram. Lilly shared this video of her working out her upper body, which eventually led to her grooving to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”
When Saldana used her geek-icon status for good
It’s common knowledge that nerd culture is often considered a primarily male interest. But Saldana, who has played an alien in three major sci-fi franchises, uses her platform as a powerful Hollywood woman for good.
Saldana puts her clout behind several causes, specifically those that support women and minorities. She also cares a great deal about international relations and often posts dual messages in English and Spanish.
When Elizabeth Olsen shared her inner foodie
Plenty of celebrities are known for getting real, while others are considered more reserved with what they share online. While Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the MCU, looks like she would be the latter, she may surprise you.
You see, Olsen has her own hashtag: #feedmefridays, where she shares paparazzi shots of herself eating. It’s pretty cool that she can poke fun at herself (as well as the media’s obsession with her) in such a light-hearted manner.
When Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o threw this amazing party
Black Panther, the latest MCU film to be released, was also one of the most highly anticipated. With its nearly all-black cast and African setting, Ryan Coogler has assembled an amazing team of actors to bring to life this story, including accomplished actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira.
Oscar-winner Nyong’o and The Walking Dead star Gurira celebrate their birthdays in March and February 2017, respectively, so they decided to throw a joint birthday party. The theme of the bash was the popular ‘80s flick Coming to America, which also happens to be about royalty from a fictional African country.
