The news came via Kensington Palace in an Instagram post on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, that said both the Duke and Duchess are “delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.” Of course, the rest of the royal family was already aware of the baby news so when did Markle and Harry reveal it to them and what was their reaction?

Here’s more on that plus everything we know so far about the duke and duchess’ royal baby.

When they told the royal family

Ever since their royal wedding in May, speculation has been swirling about when exactly Markle would become pregnant. That speculation hit a fever pitch when the former Suits star arrived at Princess Eugenie’s wedding on Oct. 12, with an oversized coat draped over her as many wondered if she was trying to conceal a baby bump. As it turns out, that’s the day when much of the royal family learned she and Harry are expecting.

Video inside St. George’s Chapel for Eugenie’s wedding showed Markle and Princess Anne engaged in a happy conversation just before the ceremony began. Many now believe that was the moment the duchess told the Princess Royal the happy news.

Editor-in-Chief of Royal Central, Charlie Proctor, tweeted on Monday that he had a feeling the day of the wedding that’s what two women were discussing, writing, “I didn’t want to say anything at the time because I know how annoying the rumor mill is, but Meghan’s conversation with Princess Anne suddenly makes a lot more sense now. Anne looking at her stomach, the hand movements etc.”

The royal baby is due this spring

Everyone may have already started taking on bets on whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will have a boy or girl, but the only thing we know for sure right now is that their little one will be arriving in the spring of 2019.

When Markle does give birth, it’s likely she’ll follow in the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Diana’s footsteps by having the child at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital.

As for names, Hello! reported that the early favorites are James and Victoria.

Reaction from the rest of the royals

Following the big announcement, the palace noted that Harry’s brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are “delighted” over the news. We know the new baby will have quite a few playmates with big cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall are also said to be thrilled about the news.

Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, has responded about being a grandmother as well. Royal commentator Emily Nash tweeted that a spokesperson for the palace revealed that Doria “is very happy about this lovely news and is looking forward to welcoming her first grandchild.”

And, in a statement, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “My warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the happy news they are expecting a baby in the Spring. Wishing them all the best.”
