‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: Fans Want to See an Unexplored Side of Sam

Of the superhero properties that have consumed the media landscape in recent years, none is bigger than the Avengers franchise. This property, based off Marvel Comics and owned by the Disney corporation, has spawned a seemingly infinite amount of movies, games, and, of course, shows. The miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is one such spin-off that is seeing immense success, and has received praise and acclaim from both fans and critics.

It follows where Avengers: Endgame left off, but builds into its own plot and conflicts, and, of course, character development. Fans of the show are especially interested in how the characters and their relationships are shifting in this new show, and want to learn more about the characters.

One particular aspect of a main character has fans wanting to see more. But what character has fans talking? And what do they want to see from this character?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, and focuses on Sam Wilson, the Falcon, and Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier.

At the end of Endgame, Steve Rogers, or Captain America, hands Sam Wilson his shield — meaning he’s passing on the mantle to Wilson. At the beginning of the show, however, Wilson decides he’d rather keep his own superhero identity, and so it passes onto John Walker, who becomes the new Captain America.

The show keeps its focus on Wilson and Barnes, however. The main villain of the show so far is a group called the Flag Smashers, who wish to return to the state of the world immediately after the Thanos Snap of Infinity War. Therefore, this relationship and these characters are very important to the fandom.

Sam Wilson originates from the Captain America comics of the 1960s, and was in fact the first mainstream Black superhero. His superhero identity is the Falcon: a veteran with a prototype wingsuit that allows him to fly.

In the film series, he first appears in The Winter Soldier, and continues to be a major character in the succeeding films. In Infinity War, Wilson is disintegrated by the Thanos snap, but before the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he is brought back, allowing fans to see more of him.

In the Avengers films, Wilson was a pararescueman, meaning he has a high degree of medical training. Fans of the show are curious to see if this training will appear, and discussed this on the Marvel fan Reddit:

“It’s great that we’ve got to see him kick ass and take names, but he has another skillset that the writers are just letting sit on the table untouched.”

Another speculated on how the writers could incorporate this skill set:

“I’m imagining Bucky gets severely hurt at some point (either up against the Flag-Smashers or US Agent) and Sam gets to bust out his medical skills and there’s just lighthearted bickering between the two as Sam patches Bucky up.”

It’s clear that fans are very invested in these characters, and want to see some more characterization. Hopefully, the show will live up to these expectations!
