We have so many questions. Thanks to the D23 Expo’s look into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans learned something pretty shocking about the protagonist, Rey. Some fans think that Rey might be influenced by Emperor Palpatine in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’
There’s no way that Rey can willingly turn to the dark side, right? Some fans think that this clip of Rey with the red lightsaber might have something to do with the return of Emperor Palpatine. Could he be controlling and manipulating Rey? Could Rey have a clone that is a darker version of herself? Because fans also see C-3PO with red eyes, viewers speculate that there’s an outside force of the dark side at play in The Rise of Skywalker.
Other fans think that Rey is having a moment like Luke Skywalker had in ‘Empire Strikes Back’
True Star Wars fans remember the scene in The Empire Strikes Back when Luke Skywalker is on Dagobah, and he must fight Darth Vader in his vision. Only after the figure is defeated that Luke Skywalker realizes he was fighting himself. Some fans think something similar is happening with dark Rey. She has to confront her dark past and the dark crevasses in her life to move forward.
Fans believe this might be what Kylo saw when he touched Rey’s hand in ‘The Last Jedi’
For all the Reylo fans out there, some fans think that this clip connects the dots between Kylo Ren and Rey’s vision during Star Wars: The Last Jedi. When their hands touched, Kylo Ren said that when the time comes, he knows that she’ll be the one to turn. How far into the future Kylo saw, however, no one knows for sure.
A few Reylo fans say that this might be the moment and Kylo and Rey will finally fight together. Others say that their roles might flip, and Kylo Ren might be the one to turn Rey back to the light side.
“So, what if Rey really killed her parents and Palpatine is the one who reveals it to her to turn her to the dark side and kill Ben. She goes dark, and Ben brings her back with the power of love,” said one Twitter user.
There are still a few other fan theories regarding Dark Rey of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’
Even with the hints that Star Wars gave to fans, the theories just keep flying. Some other fans took to Twitter, sharing connections to previous films and characters.
“I still think Rey is a clone and the Sith version from the new The Rise of Skywalker trailer is a clone that has been activated and possessed by Emperor Palpatine. The vision she had in The Last Jedi screamed ‘clone’ to me at the time,” speculated one Twitter user. Regardless of the theories, some fans commended Star Wars and Disney for creating the protagonist, Rey.
“I spent the 2000s counting every time I saw a woman on screen using a lightsaber, and how often she got to speak. I didn’t even need one finger for the latter. The basic existence of Rey consistently breaks my brain,” said one Twitter user.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on Dec. 20, 2019.
