The Marvel Cinematic Universe might have just had a banner year with the release of Avengers: Endgame, but the massive organization isn’t slowing down. Plans are still in place for a sequel to the groundbreaking film Black Panther and fans couldn’t possibly be more excited.
There is a lot of secrecy surrounding the project and many details still haven’t been revealed. But when it comes to one important element involving the film’s title character, a lot of fans have a great deal to say. Keep reading to learn why Black Panther became so popular and what we know about Black Panther 2.
‘Black Panther’ is a hugely popular film
When it was released in early 2018, Black Panther was possibly the most highly-anticipated film of the year. The project had been in development for years, and finally, the right combination of actors and creators came together to tell the story of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), who returns to his homeworld of Wakanda in order to assume the mantle of leadership when his father dies. Of course, T’Challa is also Black Panther, a superhero who possesses the powers of exceptional strength and agility.
Boseman, the acclaimed actor who first started receiving recognition for his work in the James Brown biopic Get On Up, joined a cast of incredible actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Martin Freeman, and Andy Serkis. Certainly, the fantastic cast helped to contribute to the cultural phenomenon that Black Panther became.
But it was also the fact that, in pop culture, there had been a distinct lack of African-American superheroes. Black Panther has become one of Marvel’s most successful films, and its popularity shows no sign of waning in the years to come. It also sent a strong message to Hollywood: a non-white cast can rake in profits.
What do we know about ‘Black Panther 2’?
T’Challa/Black Panther was one of the featured players in Avengers: Endgame, and although at first, his prospects seemed bleak, he was ultimately one of the few heroes who remained standing at the end of the film. Therefore, it was a foregone conclusion that there would certainly be a sequel film focused entirely on T’Challa. The question remains, when will that film be released?
Right now, all fans know is that the sequel is confirmed and remains set for a release sometime in early 2022. Recently, Marvel confirmed the release date as May 6th, 2022, but that is subject to change.
Most of the original cast is set to return, including Boseman, Nyong’o, and Gurira. The exact title has not yet been released, so fans are still referring to the film by the working title of Black Panther 2.
As far as plot details, little is known, however, one fan theory as to why the film might be taking so long references the idea that Marvel could be looking to tie the story into the X-Men universe.
What do fans have to say about Black Panther’s costume?
Obviously, no details regarding costuming or design have yet been released. Still, fans have their “wish list” of specific things that they would like to see in the film.
Recently, a group of Reddit users discussed the costumes for Black Panther 2, and how they would much prefer that Black Panther’s original costume from Captain America: Civil War (the character’s first film appearance) be utilized for the sequel. They stated that it had a much more “stealthy” look than the costume used for the Black Panther film.
The original poster also expressed the desire to see T’Challa wear his father’s golden suit. Other users were quick to respond, stating that it is likely that the character will get an entirely new costume, but that it might be more “accurate” to the comic books.
