Some viewers are calling out Kelly Ripa for comments about her son, who has now moved out on his own, experiencing what she calls “extreme poverty” in Brooklyn. It isn’t the first time that the talk show host and actress has received criticism for her comments and behavior.
Kelly Ripa talks about her son being ‘chronically poor’
Ripa’s son, 22-year-old Michael, just graduated from New York University and is living in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood.
“I think he loves the freedom. He hates paying his own rent and he’s chronically poor. I don’t think he ever really experienced extreme poverty like now,” Ripa said of her oldest child. She and Mark Conseulos have three kids.
She also talked about the experience of having her children go to college in the city that they grew up. Of his freshman year, she said, “We drop him off at his dorm. We have lunch together. We look at each other. We say, ‘We did it. We have a child in college. We did it! Oh my gosh. We come home. It’s about 10 minutes away. We walk through the front door and he is standing in the hallway.”
Fans call out Kelly Ripa for ‘privileged’ comments
Fans aren’t taking too kindly to Ripa’s remarks.
“Your comments about your son living on his own is a joke. Sure, many parents try the ‘tough love’ route. Some have no choice. However, your son, unlike many others, can always come home, call home. & use his parentage as a stepping stone. I bet he’s not starving,” wrote one viewer on Twitter.
Another person wrote, “I think @KellyRipa should try extreme poverty for a week before making light of it. Most people in extreme poverty don’t even have Halloween money to depend on. It’s usually choosing between feeding your kids or yourself, paying bills or buying food. Very poor taste.”
“@KellyRipa so you stated on jimmy kimmel that your son is experiencing “extreme poverty” wow…what is he living on the street? With no job no healthcare no food?” said another.
Someone else referred to the comments as privileged. “Extreme poverty is being engulfed in hopelessness, without a safety net. Playing “extreme poverty” is what anyone in Ripa’s very privileged family chooses to do,” they said.
Kelly Ripa has been in controversy before
The response to her remarks on Jimmy Kimmel Live! isn’t the first time that Ripa has courted controversy.
Infamously, Ripa was critiqued for her behavior when Michael Strahan made the move to Good Morning America.
After reportedly feeling blindsided by his upcoming job change, Ripa decided to take a week off from work at Live with Kelly and Michael. Earlier this year, Strahan revealed that he no longer talks to Ripa.
During the time where she was off of the show, the word “privilege” once again came up with describing the host. “Kelly Ripa’s privilege got her temper tantrum being pacified, while she’s lounging in the caribbean,” wrote a viewer back in 2016.
Due to the backlash from her comments, Ripa may be facing a hard lesson that words mean things.
