Fans Are Still Mad About These Key Themes ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Leave Out
Adapting a book to the big screen is no small feat. Especially when said book is a bestselling phenomenon like the Harry Potter series. Still, the movies managed to remain relatively faithful to what’s in the books. However, they couldn’t keep everything the same. The Harry Potter movies leave out some key themes from the books.
Some themes and aspects that the Harry Potter movies left out would have made fans very happy. Harry Potter fans are a passionate bunch, and we don’t like the idea of our beloved series being changed in any way. So what are these changes that have fans so upset?
What do the ‘Harry Potter’ movies leave out?
Some of these details may seem minuscule to casual viewers of the movies, but they all matter a lot to fans. The first key theme that the Harry Potter movies leave out is SPEW, which is The Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare. This is the group that Hermione founds during Goblet of Fire to help the house-elves who are suffering under — in her view — horrific conditions of enslavement.
This detail may seem minor. Why does it matter that Hermione founds SPEW? Why does her concern about the treatment of house-elves matter so much? And it all has to do with Hermione’s character. The reason she cares about house-elves so much is that she supports equality for all magical creatures, because she knows, as a Muggleborn, what it’s like to be treated badly in wizarding society.
Movies leave out the Marauders’ backstory?
The Marauders are beloved characters in the Harry Potter books. The group is made up of four close — and mischievous — friends: Moony (Remus Lupin), Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew), Padfoot (Sirius Black), and Prongs (James Potter). They create the map — under their code names of course —that later is given to Harry and plays a huge role in his shenanigans at Hogwarts. What the Harry Potter movies leave out is an extended backstory on the Marauders.
The Marauders are interesting characters and many fans probably feel that they deserve more. While the Marauders do make their appearances, the Harry Potter movies leave out much of the backstory that we get in the books.
While we’re on the topic of the Marauders, let’s mention Peter Pettigrew. In the Deathly Hallows book, he tries to strangle Harry with a silver hand that Voldemort gave him. Harry reminds Pettigrew that he owes his life to him and Pettigrew hesitates and is then strangled by his silver hand. This detail of Pettigrew’s demise is left out of the movie.
‘Harry Potter’ movies leave out one important detail from the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ movie
The Half-Blood Prince is a major plot point of the sixth Harry Potter movie. However, it is not as important as it is in the book, where Harry, Ron, and Hermione spend a lot of time trying to figure out who the Prince is. Although the movie does solve the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince’s true identity, it’s not as satisfying to many fans without the intense buildup.
This is a classic case of the book being better than the movie.
