Why Fans Don’t Want to See ‘Dead to Me’ Season 2
Netflix’s new original series, Dead to Me, starring Christina Applegate, 47, and Linda Cardellini, 43, became a hit in the weeks following its premiere in early May 2019. Just weeks after the show’s release, Netflix announced they re-upped the show for a second season. But some are saying the show should end with Season 1. Get all the details ahead.
How did Season 1 of ‘Dead to Me’ end?
We’re saying it right now. There are spoilers ahead. We repeat, there are spoilers ahead.
Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger. The final scene showed Judy (Cardellini) returning to Jen’s (Applegate) house to find her standing by the pool with Steve (James Marsden) floating dead from what appears to be a gunshot wound.
What’s in store for Season 2 of ‘Dead to Me’?
Liz Feldman, the creator/showrunner of Dead to Me recently discussed the future of the show.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feldman explained she wanted to see Jen and Judy’s friendship continue to grow under very unusual circumstances.
“What I wanted to do was create a situation where they’re forced together, and they need each other now in some ways more than they did at the beginning of season 1,” she said.
In another interview, Feldman dropped a hint about a possible twist in the plot. Just because the final scene appeared the show the aftermath of Jen shooting Steve, that may not be exactly what happened.
“There’s an evening of the score and there’s a rebalancing that will take place and almost, in some ways, a role reversal,” Feldman told The Hollywood Reporter about what could happen in Season 2.
Is Feldman saying Jen will become like Judy, someone who was involved in a crime with a co-conspirator?
Why some fans don’t want a second season of ‘Dead to Me’
Even though there are so many questions fans want answers to in Season 2, should there be more episodes of Dead to Me? Our first instinct is to say “yes” because Season 1 was in two words, “good television.”
But as Esquire points out, the unique storyline of Season 1 made it so interesting to watch, and with a new narrative, the show may lack the originality Season 1 brought.
While the overwhelming majority of Twitter users can’t wait for Season 2 of Dead to Me, some feel otherwise. One Twitter user suggested adding another episode to Season 1 to answer lingering questions.
“So I just finished #DeadToMe and I gotta say, while it was a good show I wish they would have made just one more episode and not leave it on a cliffhanger and drag it out,” they wrote.
This got us wondering, if Netflix and the TV industry at large, doesn’t know when to leave well enough alone? Why mess with perfection?
We understand Netflix made big bucks on the show and want to continue doing so but there’s a case to made for shows that continue for years and get steadily worse.
That’s not to say the same scenario will happen with Dead to Me. We sincerely hope it beats the odds but statistically speaking, Season 1 of a show is often better than what follows.
Considering how the dynamic’s changed in Jen and Judy’s friendship, will Season 2 be as captivating as the first? We don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see when Season 2 premieres in 2020.
