Fans React to Keanu Reeves and SpongeBob Together in New Movie Trailer

Two of America’s most beloved figures are sharing the big screen together for a mad ride under the sea—even if it’s only for a moment. Just this morning, Paramount Pictures dropped a trailer for the new SpongeBob Squarepants movie and a special someone has a cameo: Keanu Reeves. Why not?

Both of them have been everywhere lately, with SpongeBob celebrating a birthday this year, getting his own Pantone color, and the launch of a Broadway musical, and Reeves in the spotlight for John Wick, The Matrix 4, Toy Story 4, Always Be My Maybe, and just existing. But the focus here is on the newest SpongeBob flick heading to theaters and how the trailer has people talking.

SpongeBob movie trailer has social media buzzing

Your favorite pineapple-dwelling sponge is back with the antics and raging silliness in the trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. This time, SpongeBob is distraught when he learns his pet snail Gary goes missing. Now, fans probably remember a Gary-centric episode or two from the show that sent SpongeBob into a panic, but this one’s worthy of a theater run. Gary’s gone missing before, but apparently not at this level.

With Reeve’s glowing sage guidance, Squarepants and Patrick have a shot at succeeding in their quest. Please, check it out:

There’s Reeves with his glistening eyes, a gambling bender in Atlantic City, and a googly-eyed, ever-optimistic SpongeBob. What more does one need?

How fans are feeling about ‘Sponge on the Run’

Nickelodeon’s Twitter account has already racked up more than 1 million views for the trailer, but the movie already has its detractors. Some people don’t have the warm and fuzzies for this one because they don’t like the animation.

However, the excitement is palpable for many who are praising how the CGI graphics look, calling them “gorgeous,” “stunning,” and “on point.” Of course, Reeves is inspiring memes and reactions that range from flames to eye pops, with some people saying that his career has officially peaked with this cameo. And SpongeBob gambling? Fans are loving it.

When does ‘Sponge on the Run’ come out and who’s in it?

The latest installment in the SpongeBob movie franchise is set to arrive in theaters on Memorial Day weekend in 2020. Paramount describes this adventure for the yellow sponge as:

“SpongeBob SquarePants, his best friend Patrick Star and the rest of the gang from Bikini Bottom hit the big screen in the first-ever all CGI SpongeBob motion picture event. After SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.”

The film stars Awkwafina, Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, and Rodger Bumpass as Squidward. Rest assured the whole gang will be there, which includes Sandy, Plankton, Pearl, Mrs. Puff, and Karen, Plankton’s wife. Fans are already hyped but are keeping their fingers crossed for a “Gary Come Home” nod too. We’ll see.
