Fans Still Think This Was the Worst Character On ‘Friends’
For ten years, fans followed along with the exploits of Ross, Phoebe, Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler on TV’s Friends. The show became a cultural touchstone that influenced not only how television comedies were accepted by audiences, but how actors identified with their characters.
Even 25 years after the show first aired, rumors of a Friends reunion persist, with fans visualizing the beloved characters in new scenarios or spinoffs.
However, not all of the Friends characters were loved equally – for years, fans have consistently ranked one character, in particular, as a not-so-friendly member of the crew.
What was the show about?
The show Friends follows a group of single people who live and work in New York City. Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry are the actors inhabiting the friends, who endure romantic struggles, professional battles, family drama, and all of the other troubles and joys that come with young adults trying to make their way in the world.
Critics and audiences alike loved the premise of the show, and how the situations were often very true to life. Friends perfectly balanced comedy, drama, and sadness, and the actors quickly became superstars. To this day, the work that the actors collectively did on Friends has been the highlight of their professional careers.
Which character do fans not like?
Even though fans loved Courtney Cox, and many have chosen her character of Monica Gellar as their favorite, a vocal majority of Friends watchers have chosen Monica as their least-favorite character on the show. Monica is certainly a bit pricklier than the other characters, a chef who battled obesity as a child, and as a result, is mildly obsessed with maintaining her appearance.
In a recent poll, Friends watchers ranked Monica as the “least nice” of the friends, with only 5% of the surveyed crowd picking her as their favorite. In addition to Monica’s obsessive tendencies, her character’s controlling nature is cited as one reason for her least-favorite status.
The Friends character that was chosen as the most popular was Phoebe – the free-spirited hippie of somewhat dubious musical talents. Phoebe, as portrayed by Lisa Kudrow, was a definite ditz, and frequently would say out loud what the other characters were too afraid to vocalize. In the same survey, Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, was voted the most attractive, with Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc, the “most fun.”
There are some redeeming qualities
Although Monica gets a bad rap, she also has some really great qualities that would probably make her a pretty decent friend in real life. For one, she’s an excellent chef and is usually the host for many of the get-togethers among the friend group – even if she does obsess closely over the finer details of the party decor.
She’s also unquestionably devoted to her family and friends, including her older brother Ross, played by David Schwimmer, even when he does get on her nerves quite frequently.
A Reddit thread broke down the details of why Monica is often viewed as a bad or annoying character, and one forum member pointed out that in spite of her negative traits, she was often times the “glue” that held the disjointed group together. Just like with any group of friends, and especially when everyone has such drastically different personality traits, there will always be someone who doesn’t get along perfectly well with everyone else.
The beauty of Friends is that the characters aren’t perfect people and that viewers can always recognize a little bit of themselves in the group.
