Fans Want Meghan Markle to Host Canadian Stop on Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ Book Tour
Fans want Meghan, Duchess of Sussex to play a role in former first lady Michelle Obama’s book tour when she makes a stop in Canada at the end of March for her memoir, Becoming. More specifically, they want the duchess to moderate the discussion.
November 2018 marked the release of Obama’s memoir, and since then it has become a major hit, selling hard copies and digital downloads including the audiobook that earned Obama a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. Due to the popularity of the book and the success of the book tour, additional dates were added.
A moderator hasn’t been announced, and fans want Meghan Markle to step in
One of the upcoming stops on the tour will be in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, on March 31, 2020. In light of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepping down as senior members of the British royal family, fans are hoping Meghan will attend the book tour stop, as she has been living on Canada’s Vancouver Island with Prince Harry and their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
On the Facebook group, Royally Obsessed (a Royal Family Fan Club), one member said they hoped Meghan might be the moderator when Obama heads to Canada.
“I’m secretly hoping a certain resident feminist Duchess fills the seat,” one member of the Facebook group wrote referring to the event’s moderator being unknown. “How awesome would that be?” they added.
Members of the group were quick to share in the excitement about the possibility of Meghan taking part in the book tour. “That wouldn’t surprise me at all! What a great idea,” one person wrote. Another said it’d be a good way for the Duchess to exit her role as a senior royal, saying, “What a great way to spend her last day as an official working royal-by moving on with her life in a high-profile way!”
While it’s certainly a possibility Meghan might indeed take on the role of moderator, how likely is it that it will happen?
The duchess doesn’t have any official royal engagements scheduled
As Meghan and Prince Harry end their time as senior royals, they have one last round of official engagements across the pond.
Their final royal schedule went public in Feb. 2020 and between the two of them they have appearances scheduled for Feb. 28 and others March 5 – 8 before attending the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey with Queen Elizabeth II on March 9.
While Meghan doesn’t have any publicly known scheduling conflicts for March 31, that isn’t to say she doesn’t have other plans already in place.
She’s been part of similar events before
One reason Meghan would make a great moderator is that she’s given speeches and attended high-profile panels before.
She’d been doing similar work before she became an official member of the royal family so she’s surely comfortable with taking on the job of a moderator.
Michelle Obama once called Meghan Markle an ‘inspiration’ and a ‘friend
In an Instagram post on Sept. 25, 2019, Obama shared a picture of the duchess, and in the caption thanked her “friend” for being a “thoughtful leader who is breaking the mold and making our world better for it.” She also called Meghan a “leader” and “an inspiration to so many.”
Judging by those comments, Obama would have no problem with the duchess moderating a stop on her book tour. We think the appearance is in line with what Prince Harry and Meghan want to achieve and given their friendship with the Obamas — the duke interviewed former President Barack Obama in 2018 — it wouldn’t be so far-fetched to think Meghan might show up.
We’ll just have to wait until March 31 to see if the duchess attends the event.
