Netflix has announced the premiere date for the highly anticipated third season of its popular prison drama Orange Is the New Black. The most-watched original series on Netflix will make its third season available to stream in its entirety on June 12, according to an announcement seen by NME. The streaming service also announced some changes to come in the third season of the dramedy set in a women’s prison that fans will certainly be happy about.
First, as has previously been reported, Laura Prepon will go from a recurring character to a main cast member and return to being a central character of the show as Piper’s (Taylor Schilling) on-and-off girlfriend Alex Vause. Fans were disappointed that in the show’s second season Alex and Piper were not often together, as Prepon had other commitments that prevented her from being a part of the main cast. Prepon has promised that she will appear in every episode in the third season. Now Alex and Piper’s volatile chemistry will go back to providing a main part of the show’s juicy drama.
One leg of the sort-of love triangle that fueled the show’s first two seasons will disappear altogether. Larry, played by American Pie’s Jason Biggs, was Piper’s helpless and hapless fiancee on the outside who vowed to stay with her while she served her time for a crime committed during her wild youth years, before he ever met her. That conflict was interesting when the show first began, but as it went on Larry’s character became less interesting and less likable.
Larry and Piper had none of the chemistry that Alex and Piper did, and pretty much no one was rooting for things to work out between them. Even the attempt to make him a kind of villain by lashing out at Piper for cheating on him felt like it didn’t really work. The things Larry did to hurt Piper had no real bite to them because she never cared about him as much as she did Alex, and neither did the audience.
During Season 2, Larry and Piper finally called it quits for good, and now it’s been announced that Larry won’t return in Season 3 at all. “They’re not focusing on Larry at the moment,” Biggs told the New York Daily News, per Variety. “Larry will not be in Season 3. But there’s always a possibility he can come back.”
Larry isn’t the only character who’s not coming back on Season 3. Paul Schreiber, who plays the disgusting prison guard nicknamed Pornstache, has previously said he won’t be returning for Season 3 due to his commitment to the new HBO series The Brink. While Pornstache was a villain on Orange, he was a character that fans loved to hate, and unlike with Larry, many were disappointed to see him go. Schreiber has also said that he could return after this upcoming season.
The fan-favorite characters among the huge ensemble cast populating the women’s prison who will be coming back include Red (Kate Mulgrew), Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba), Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning), Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Nicky (Natasha Lyonne), and Lorna (Yael Stone). The other piece of great news for fans of Jenji Kohan’s show is that it will have an extra episode this season. While the first two seasons had 13 episodes each, the third will have 14 for an extra hour of binge-watching.
No Larry, Alex is back, and an extra episode? It sounds like Season 3 could be the best season of Orange Is the New Black yet.
