‘Euphoria’ gives an honest look at mental illness

The television network HBO had multiple successful shows, including Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Big Little Lies, and now, Euphoria. Starring Zendaya, Euphoria tells the story of a teenager struggling with addiction and mental illness. The show also deals with themes of sexuality, gender expression, body image issues, and anxiety.

HBO’s television series, Euphoria premiered on June 16, 2019. Prior to the release date, some parents were concerned about letting their children watch the show. In light of the dark themes, Zendaya posted on Instagram and Twitter with a trigger warning for her fans.

“It’s not Zendaya’s responsibility to monitor what your children watch on television. If you don’t want them seeing graphic content, don’t let them watch Euphoria. Period. Z is 22 years old, she’s not a Disney Channel actress anymore and she shouldn’t have to cater to a younger,” said one Twitter user, defending Zendaya’s post.

Zendaya’s fans supported her transition from Disney shows into shows with more adult themes. According to viewers on Twitter, Euphoria is a television series with mature content. Yet, it still highlights Zendaya’s acting abilities.

Fans are already obsessed with ‘Euphoria’

Some fans commended Zendaya on her duality. In Spider-Man: Homecoming and presumably in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Zendaya plays the effortlessly smart and witty MJ. In Euphoria, Zendaya plays a character with a drug addiction, who struggles with mental wellness.

“Zendaya is really out here playing two completely different types of high school students,” said one Twitter user. “@Zendaya hi what’s it like having so much talent?”

Additionally, some fans noted how honestly Euphoria depicts teenage addiction. According to viewers on Twitter, Zendaya’s acting added to the overall plot and her character’s story.

“If you’re looking for a show with excellent acting, a good soundtrack, and stunning visuals, this is the one,” said another Twitter user. “It gives an honest and raw portrait of teenage addiction and mental illness. Zendaya plays the lead role of a young black girl coming of age.”

“I’m beyond proud of you and the entire cast. All your hard work over the last eight months showed through in the first episode,” said another fan on Twitter to Zendaya.

Euphoria is available on HBO. Zendaya’s newest movie Spider-Man: Far From Home premieres in the United States on July 2, 2019.
