‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Just Revealed the French Word for Muggle and It Sucks

The sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemThe Crimes of Grindelwald, will be making its magical debut on Nov. 16, but we’re already getting hints about what Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander will be up to this time around. Though the first film was set in New York City during the 1920′,=s, it appears that we will be headed overseas for The Crimes of Grindelwald.

A change in location isn’t the only thing we can expect from Fantastic Beasts 2. Director David Yates just revealed the French word for “muggle” — and let’s just say it doesn’t have anywhere near as glorious of a ring to it as “no-maj” does.

With five films planned for the Fantastic Beasts franchise, it appears that they will all be set in different cities across the globe. The Crimes of Grindelwald will take place in 1927, just a few months after the first film.

This time, Newt and his magical suitcase will be headed to the city of love and light, Paris.

Unlike the United States, Paris isn’t caught up in dividing muggles and the Wizarding world. Yates told Entertainment Weekly,

[The wizarding world in Paris is] quite glamorous, it’s quite beautiful. There’s a community that lives alongside the muggle community, it’s much freer than in New York, where there’s segregation. Paris is a bit like England, actually, not so hung up about the differences between the two. Magical people can freely move into non-magical communities as long as they’re discrete about their talents…

A very dark story

Despite being set in the wondrous city of Paris, The Crimes of Grindelwald will have some very dark themes. According to the film’s synopsis, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) has escaped from the Magical Congress of the United States of America  (MACUSA). He has embarked on a mission to convince pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings.

Apparently, “The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law). But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander.”

Just when we thought everything was going to be fancy and posh in the Parisian Wizarding World, Yates revealed the French world for muggle. To put it kindly, we’re less than impressed. Yates told Entertainment Weekly that folks with no magical abilities in France are called “non–magique.”

Really? Surely someone could have come up with something more creative than that.

Jude Law is about to make his debut as a young, golden-haired Albus Dumbledore, and we’re just going to say that we aren’t mad about it at all.

With a lush blue corduroy coat, Dumbledore looks ready to take on Grindelwald and wrestle the Elder Wand out of his old friend’s hand.

Newt’s friends, muggle Jacob (Dan Fogler) and sisters Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) are all set to return in Fantastic Beasts 2. Apparently, Ezra Miller’s Credence is also alive, which is odd because we thought he died in the first film. After all, Obscurials don’t typically survive very long.

Fantastic Beasts 2 is also welcoming some new characters. Zoë Kravitz’s Leta Lestrange will be making her glorious debut, though much to Newt’s dismay, she is engaged to his older brother Theseus (Callum Turner). Nicolas Flamel, the sorcerer’s stone creator, will also be making an appearance.

Other new characters include Spielman (Wolf Roth), Bunty (Victoria Yeates), Torquil Travers (Derek Riddel), Rosie (Poppy Corby-Tuech), and Arnold Guzman (Cornell S John). 2 Dope Queens co-host Jessica Williams will also be joining the cast,

We told you The Crimes of Grindelwald would be dark, but apparently, that’s only the beginning of it. In this new movie, we’ll meet Maledictus who carry blood cures that make them transform into beasts. No, these are not your friendly Animagus or even your typical werewolves, it’s much worse than that.

We’ll see ecactly what goes down when Fantastic Beasts hits theaters in the fall.
