Revealing Details About the Feud Between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B
Nicki Minaj and Cardi B have often said that they aren’t feuding. But it’s hard to deny the recent evidence — including the bump coming up on Cardi B’s forehead when she left a New York Fashion Week party after getting into a fight with Nicki Minaj.
The two chart-topping rappers haven’t often gotten into physical altercations. But they have had some confusing interactions over the years. These are the most revealing details about the feud — or drama — between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.
Nicki Minaj and Cardi B: The feud that never was?
As recently as April 2018, W Magazine characterized the drama between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B as “the feud that never was.” Fans naturally pitted the two against each other, and after Cardi B’s 2017 debut, “sources ranging from random Twitter trolls to Bonnie Fuller’s Hollywood Life can’t help but spread conspiracy theories that there’s some bad blood boiling under the surface ready to explode into a full-out feud at any moment,” W explained.
The publication noted that the two rappers had never “negatively called out the other by name.” And they even “spent the better part of the last year publicly denying any beef.” When fans assumed that a Nicki Minaj line in London On Da Track’s track “No Flag” was aimed at Cardi, Nicki clarified that she’d written the verse months before. Similarly, Cardi denied that her lyrics in G-Eazy’s song “No Limit” were about Nicki. They also both appeared on Migos’s “MotorSport.”
Cardi B said that people ‘want that drama’
Late in 2017, Cardi B also addressed the rumors. NME reports that in an interview with Complex, Cardi characterized the speculation as “so annoying.” She added, “I feel like people wouldn’t even be satisfied even if me and [Nicki] was making out. . . I feel like people just want that drama.” Nicki tweeted in response, “Very true. We could make out & it wouldn’t be enough.”
Nicki also wrote that “The conspiracy theories r just so tired. Relax. Breathe.” And she added, “Imagine me not knowing who on a song [with] me. . . These are men in our culture who simply refuse to let it go. They don’t do this to male MCs.” But rumors continued to circulate, with W Magazine reporting that Cardi said that the drama was all created by fans. “What do people expect from me? I’ve already said she’s an amazing artist, I pay my respects to her. I’ve done videos before of me jamming to her songs. . . Y’all want me to say something bad.”
But Nicki Minaj did say that they got off on the wrong foot
The Cut notes that though Cardi B had been saying that the “feud” between the two rappers was imagined by fans, Nicki Minaj admitted that the two did get off on the wrong foot. The source of the drama? The Migos song, “MotorSport,” which featured both rappers. It was originally a collaboration with just Quavo and Nicki. But Nicki says that later, after the rest of the Migos joined, Quavo texted to ask if Cardi B could also have a verse on it. Nicki says she approved.
But as The Cut explains, “that’s not the story she says Cardi or Migos told after the fact,” when they gave interviews portraying Nicki as “the bad person” so that Cardi B could “play the victim”:
“The only thing with Cardi that really, really, really hurt my feelings was the first interview she did after ‘MotorSport’ came out. With ‘MotorSport,’ I kinda felt ambushed,” she says. “The first thing that came out of her mouth about a Nicki Minaj feature was ‘she changed the verse’ . . . When it was time to clear the air about that, no one did that. All of them allowed me to look like I lied.”
And they did seem to trade some insults
Billboard reports that despite Nicki Minaj and Cardi B denying rumors of a feud, they’ve had a complicated relationship. And though they also denied using their “MotorSport” verses to insult each other — as well as their lines on “No Flag” and “No Limit” — there are other instances in which the two seemed to have traded insults.
- Nicki seemed to call out Cardi’s then-boyfriend and now-husband, Offset, on Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish.”
- Cardi vented on Instagram that “shit be breaking my heart because the people, your idols, become rivals.”
- Cardi called out an unnamed woman for being fake to her at a MoMA PS1 Warm Up event.
The feud turned physical at New York Fashion Week
Though Nicki Minaj and Cardi B had denied the feud in the past, the drama turned physical when the rappers got into a fight at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party at New York Fashion Week. People reports that they got into an “altercation” on a second-floor balcony during a Christina Aguilera performance. Afterward, security escorted Cardi out, and she was “seen leaving the party with a large lump on her forehead but no shoes,” and with her Dolce & Gabbana gown ripped.
In various videos of the incident, Cardi is heard yelling that people were talking about her daughter. She later wrote an Instagram post that didn’t mention Nicki by name but suggested that Nicki had tried to sabotage Cardi’s career and had also spoken poorly about the rapper’s daughter, Kulture Kiari. The post read:
I’ve let a lot of shit slide! I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me, I let you attempt to stop my bags, fuck up the way I eat! You’ve threaten other artists in the industry, told them if they work with me you’ll stop fuckin with them!! I let you talk big shit about me!!
