Here Are a Few References to Other Star Wars Movies in ‘the Rise of Skywalker’ Trailer

December can’t come soon enough. With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker right around the corner, some fans noticed references to older movies in the official trailer and D23 Expo’s clip. From Lando Calrissian flying the Millennium Falcon to Rey wielding a Darth Maul-esque lightsaber, here are few nods to older Star Wars movies in The Rise of Skywalker.

A few characters from the original trilogy return to ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

There are a few familiar faces in the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Of course, Finn, Poe, and Rey are back in their fight with the resistance. However, there are a few other characters from the original trilogy in this final movie. That includes Princess Leia, now General Organa, portrayed by Carrie Fisher.

Lando Calrissian returns to this Star Wars movie and, from what it looks like in a trailer, he’s back in the Millennium Falcon. From when fans first met Lando in Empire Strikes Back, the character has been looking to take back Han Solo’s ship. Now, he’ll finally have a chance, most likely by joining the resistance.

The Knights of Ren return to fight in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

Fans saw a glimpse of Kylo Ren’s fierce squad, known as the Knights of Ren, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Touching Luke’s lightsaber caused Rey’s vision. As a result, the Jedi saw Kylo Ren surrounded by other warriors, each wielding a unique weapon.

Thanks to Vanity Fair and their look into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans learned that the warriors will reappear in the final movie of the sequel trilogy. The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, decided to exclude the Knights of Ren from the previous movie.

“I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards but then it would feel like wasting them because all those guards had to die. And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene,” Director Rian Johnson said in an interview. “Truth is, I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.”

Rey had a red lightsaber in the exclusive look at ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

Being a sith lord is a double-edged sword — or in Rey’s case, a double-edged lightsaber. In a Star Wars clip from the D23 Expo, fans saw Rey dressed in black, wielding a unique red lightsaber. There are multiple theories regarding Rey’s turn to the dark side. However, some fans noticed connections between Rey and villain from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul.

“Evil Rey in the Rise of Skywalker sizzle is clearly a vision of some sort. At first, her lightsaber looks like she’s holding two separate blades, but she snaps them together to form one long lightsaber like Darth Maul,” said one Twitter user.

“That Star Wars trailer gave me goosebumps. Rey holds a red double-bladed lightsaber and the first thing that came to mind was Darth Maul. I’m sure it’s just part of a vision but it’s a cool way to introduce more of Palpatine,” said another Twitter user.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in the United States on Dec. 20, 2019. Until then, fans can watch Star Wars movies on Netflix and, soon, Disney’s streaming platform, entitled Disney Plus.
