Why did Joanna Gaines argue with God over Chip?

Chip and Joanna Gaines have opposite personalities, while the former is outgoing, the latter is more reserved and analytical. Their first date could’ve been their last one as Joanna was not vibing with how talkative Chip was. Although they were seemingly not good on paper, an argument with God made Joanna pause and rethink things.

“On our first date, Chip was just talking, and talking, and talking,” Joanna explained on Super Soul. “I sat there and kind of went away like this isn’t going to last. This is one I’ve heard God’s voice more than ever. I heard him say, ‘This is the man you’re going to marry,’ and I’m arguing with God and said, ‘No it’s not. This is the man you’re gonna marry, no, he talks a lot, God.’ Chip is still going, he doesn’t even know I’ve left the conversation. Now I’m like arguing with God.”

Joanna said that her whole life she was attracted to the “quiet” while Chip “was attracted to the life of the party.” The designer was amazed that she would end up with someone she thought was opposite to her anded somehow everything has worked out for them.

Chip Gaines feels indebted to his wife

Things between the couple have worked out so well that Chip feels that he owes Joanna his life. The builder told Oprah that when he met Joanna he was “like a dog chasing his tail,” with no real direction.

“I was just such an idiot and I was just so, so anxious and so excitable,” Chip continued. “My dad used to [say], in a loving way, ‘Son, talking to you is like trying to get a drink of water out of a fire hydrant.’ I was always that kind of energy, it wasn’t pleasant, it wasn’t cute. Joe has just kind of grounded me. When I die or I’m on my deathbed, what I’ll say looking back is that ‘I owe you my life because you settled me down.’”

Due to their clashing personalities, Joanna feels that they have learned from each other.

“Chip is always teaching me [that] if you’re not having fun, if you’re not enjoying, and savoring these moments, then why are you doing it? And he also pushes me to do it,” Joanna added.
