Former ‘Office’ Alum John Krasinski Came Close to Playing This Marvel Superhero
Though his portrayal of the lovable Jim Halpert from NBC’s hit The Office is what most people first think of with this Hollywood star, John Krasinski continues to stretch his wings as an actor, director, and screenwriter.
The latest word on the street is Krasinski will be tapped for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Fantastic Four reboot, where he would be cast as – who else – Mr. Fantastic himself, aka Reed Richards. While rumors have not yet been confirmed, this would not be the first time Krasinski dipped his toe in the MCU pool.
Not only is Krasinski’s name being bandied about for the Marvel reboot, but also his wife Emily Blunt is apparently high on the list to play the Invisible Woman (Susan Storm), according to Harper’s Bazaar. The pairing is a winning choice – off screen, the two have one of Hollywood’s most envied marriages. The couple, who share two daughters, has been able to transport that chemistry in front of the cameras as well.
Krasinski and Blunt co-starred in the box office hit A Quiet Place in 2018. The film raked in over $300 million worldwide. The couple was all in on the project, where Krasinski directed and co-wrote the script, as well as starred in the film, while Blunt’s dedication to her role as Evelyn Abbott earned her a Screen Actors Guild award, according to Variety. Considering the profits and accolades from their first collaboration, casting them together for a Marvel flick seems like a proposition to bank on.
He even tried on the suit
Since The Office aired its last episode in 2013, Krasinski has taken on some very ‘non-Jim’ roles, including his work in A Quiet place, starring in Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, and his current role as the title character in Amazon Prime’s Jack Ryan.
Despite the departure from his ‘everyman’ on The Office, Krasinski insists he wasn’t deliberately trying to separate from Jim. “None of those things were about running away from Jim,” he told Men’s Health last year. “Jim is one of those things that, I know, at the end of my career, I’ll still be most known for. And that’s awesome. That’s an honor. But I wanted to try different things. I wanted to set myself up to explore things that were scary, and things I wasn’t sure I was going to be good at.”
One of those roles he chose to explore was Captain America, where he got considerably far in the selection process, at one point even donning the legendary ensemble. “Yes, I put on the suit. Yes, I did the screen test. But I knew they’d offered it to Chris [Evans] like four times, and eventually I got the call,” Krasinski revealed. “‘Chris is engaging.’ And I was like, ‘Of course he is! Look at that dude. He is Captain America!’ It’s the way I was brought up—I’ve always been a realist and I respect the situation. You can’t fight against things you can’t control.”
Despite losing out to Evans, Krasinski took it in stride and even kept his nighttime plans. “I remember we were on our way to a party for Emily’s birthday when I found out,” he shared. “I hung up the phone and [told her], ‘Yeah, it’s not me.’ She was like, ‘Do you want to cancel?’ And I said, ‘No, let’s go.’”
Jim and Pam will have to stay in reruns
Though diehard Office fans would have loved to see a real-life coupling between Jim and Pam (played by Jenna Fischer), Krasinski is clearly devoted to his wife. He often takes to praising Blunt publicly, just another reason they are one of today’s cutest couples in Tinsel Town.
“The air changes in the room when she starts doing what she does,” he said of his wife last year, according to Us Weekly. “It’s so honest and so pure and so powerful. It’s like a superpower that she can just unlock and do so specifically with not many attempts. For me, I love acting, and I’m so lucky to be doing it. But she’s on another plane.”
Though Jim and Pam Halpert will have to keep their romance on the small screen, Krasinski is just as sweet in real life to real wife Emily Blunt!
